Andreas Forslund (born 1991) is a Swedish basketball coach and former player from Sundsvall, Sweden. He played basketball at the Swedish Division 1 and Division 2 levels before moving into coaching.[1]
Forslund coached within the Sundsvall Dragons organization before moving to the United States. He later served as an assistant coach for the Santa Monica College women's basketball program, spent a year at Geffen Academy and joined the men's basketball staff at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) in 2022.[2][1]
In 2025, Forslund was a member of the CSUDH coaching staff when the Toros advanced to the NCAA Division II national championship game for the first time in program history.[1]
Early life and playing career
[edit]Forslund grew up in Sundsvall and was involved in basketball from a young age. He competed at the Swedish Division 1 and Division 2 levels.[1]
His playing career included Orongo Dragons, the Division 1 farm team of Sundsvall Dragons. An archival photograph published by Sundsvalls Tidning shows Forslund playing for Orongo Dragons in 2008.[1]
Forslund later moved into coaching and worked with several youth teams in Sweden.[2]
Coaching career

[edit]Forslund coached several youth teams before coaching Orongo Dragons in Division 1.[2][1]
During the 2015–16 season, he was involved in coaching Sundsvall Dragons.[2] The club went bankrupt in 2016, after which Forslund moved to the United States to study.[1]
Santa Monica College
[edit]Forslund enrolled at Santa Monica College in California, where he studied athletic coaching.[2]
After taking a basketball coaching course at the college, his previous coaching experience in Sweden helped lead to an opportunity with the Santa Monica College women's basketball program.[1]
In August 2017, Sundsvalls Tidning reported that Forslund had been offered a position as an assistant coach for the Santa Monica College women's basketball team.[2]
Forslund subsequently spent approximately four and a half years as an assistant coach with the program.[1]
Geffen Academy
[edit]After his time at Santa Monica College, Forslund spent approximately one year at Geffen Academy at UCLA before joining Cal State Dominguez Hills.[1]
Cal State Dominguez Hills
[edit]Forslund joined the CSUDH men's basketball program as an assistant coach in 2022.[1]
CSUDH athletics records have subsequently listed Forslund as an assistant coach for the men's basketball program.[3]
He was listed among the team's assistant coaches for both the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons.[4][5]
2024–25 season
[edit]During the 2024–25 season, Cal State Dominguez Hills advanced through the NCAA Division II postseason to the national championship game.[1]
Sundsvalls Tidning reported that the team won its regular-season competition and regional championship before advancing through the national tournament. According to the newspaper, the program's previous best NCAA postseason result had been reaching regional competition.[1]
CSUDH ultimately advanced to the NCAA Division II national championship game and finished as national runner-up following a one-point loss.[1]
On April 28, 2025, Sundsvalls Tidning profiled Forslund and his role in the team's postseason run in an article titled Andreas med om historisk basketskräll i USA.[1]
Journalism
[edit]In addition to his basketball career, Forslund studied journalism at California State University, Dominguez Hills and contributed to the university's student newspaper, The Bulletin.
Forslund, Vicky Pineda and Viri Garcia Gallardo were named finalists in the Editorial/Opinion Writing category of the Society of Professional Journalists Region 11 Mark of Excellence Awards for 2024.[6]
Coaching approach
[edit]In a 2017 interview with Sundsvalls Tidning, Forslund discussed the influence of psychology on his approach to coaching and communication. He described an individualized approach in which people are treated according to how they themselves prefer to be treated.[2]
Forslund also discussed differences between coaching in Europe and the American college system, including the broader responsibilities of assistant coaches in areas such as recruiting and players' academic progress.[2]
Personal life
[edit]Forslund is from Sundsvall, Sweden, and later relocated to Southern California.[2]
In a 2017 profile, Sundsvalls Tidning discussed the deaths of both of Forslund's parents and the effect those experiences had on his outlook on life.[2]
