Amber Alejo Davis (born July 29, 1981) is a Filipino-American singer, songwriter and television host whose recording career became prominent in the Philippine R&B and urban-pop scene during the late 2000s. Her releases received recognition from Philippine music institutions including the MYX Music Awards and the Wave 89.1 Urban Music Awards.[1][2]

Davis is also known for co-composing the music for ABS-CBN's 2009 Christmas station ID song "Star ng Pasko" with Marcus Davis Jr., with lyrics by Robert Labayen. The song became an enduring part of Philippine Christmas popular culture; Rolling Stone Philippines later described it as one of the most enduring holiday songs of its generation and noted its continued prominence more than a decade after its release.[3]

Early life

[edit]

Davis was born in Mesa, Arizona, to an American father and a Filipino mother. She later moved with her family to Malolos, Bulacan, Philippines, where she was raised.

Career

[edit]

Recording career

[edit]

Davis entered the Philippine music industry in the mid-2000s and released her debut album Feel Good Music in 2006. Her early material included the single "Manila", followed by releases including "Back Into You".

"Back Into You" received nominations for Favorite Urban Video at the 2008 MYX Music Awards and Best R&B Recording at the 21st Awit Awards.[4]

Davis later released "Taas Noo", a collaboration with Filipino rapper Gloc-9. The song won Best Original Song at the Wave 89.1 Urban Music Awards. She also won Best Remake for her recording of "Spend My Life With You" with R&B singer Thor.[2]

A 2010 profile in The Philippine Star described Davis as being at the forefront of a contemporary movement in OPM and discussed her transition from independent releases to working with a major record label. The newspaper also noted the recognition received by "Taas Noo".[5]

Her music continued to receive industry recognition in the following decade. "Ain't a Crime" was nominated for Favorite Urban Video at the 2012 MYX Music Awards, alongside works by Gloc-9, Q-York, Jay R and other Philippine urban artists.[6]

Television and commercial work

[edit]

Alongside her recording career, Davis worked in television and music broadcasting, including work associated with MYX International and urban music programming.

She was also associated with PLDT myDSL Watchpad as a music artist and ambassador. The Philippine Star reported that Davis recorded music videos for the platform, including videos for "Manila" and "See You Soon", filmed in Cebu and Bohol.[5]

Songwriting and "Star ng Pasko"

[edit]

In 2009, Davis and record producer Marcus Davis Jr. composed the music for "Star ng Pasko", the song used for ABS-CBN's 2009 Christmas station identification, with lyrics by Robert Labayen.

Written following Typhoon Ondoy and Typhoon Pepeng, the song centered on themes of hope and unity in the aftermath of the disasters.

"Star ng Pasko" subsequently developed a cultural life extending beyond the original television campaign. Rolling Stone Philippines described the song as having transcended its origins as a promotional station-ID song, becoming ubiquitous following its release and remaining one of the strongest original Philippine Christmas songs produced by local media more than a decade later.[3]

The song's continuing place in Philippine Christmas culture has also been noted in later Philippine media. A 2021 Philippine Star commentary described "Star ng Pasko" as an enduring favorite among ABS-CBN Christmas station IDs more than a decade after its release.[7]
