More generally, it is unlikely that there is notability, since local electoral coverage is generally regard as routine, not establishing notability. The subject would therefore need to demonstrate the WP:GOLDENRULE due to their activities before the election cycle. Being mayor of North Miami does not bring them into scope of WP:NPOLITICIAN. Alix Desulme is a Haitian American politician and educator who serves as mayor of North Miami, Florida.[1] He previously represented District 4 on the North Miami City Council and served as the city's elected clerk.[2]

Background and education

[edit]

Desulme was born in Haiti.[3] He earned a Doctor of Education degree from the University of New England in 2019.[4]

Political career

[edit]

City council and vice mayor

[edit]

Desulme was elected to the North Miami City Council in 2015 after serving as city clerk.[2] He later served as vice mayor.[2]

In 2016, Desulme supported a proposal to establish a Chinatown along NW 7th Avenue. The council designated the area the Chinatown Cultural Arts and Innovation District.[5] He sought to attract Chinese investment to the area and welcomed a delegation of businesspeople from Shanghai.[6] Some residents and business owners questioned the proposed location and raised concerns about displacement.[5] Others welcomed the prospect of investment.[5] Desulme argued that the city could establish a Chinatown through legislation without a large existing Chinese population.[5]

In 2019, Desulme proposed a city food pantry. The council approved the proposal in June.[7] The NoMi Food Market opened at the Sunkist Grove Community Center in October through a partnership between the city, Feeding South Florida and the Florida Blue Foundation.[7]

Mayor of North Miami

[edit]

The North Miami City Council appointed Desulme mayor on December 13, 2022, following the resignation of Mayor Philippe Bien-Aime.[2][8]

In September 2023, the council passed a resolution to rename the Chinatown district the NW 7th Avenue Cultural Arts and Innovation District and replace its Asian-themed design guidelines. Councilman Pierre Frantz Charles sponsored the resolution.[9]

Desulme won a full term as mayor in the December 2024 runoff election.[8]
