Alexandra Kiesel (born 1982) is a German fashion designer based in Berlin. She is known for her modular, colour focused approach to fashion design and for winning the 2011 Designer for Tomorrow by Peek & Cloppenburg Düsseldorf award, which was presented during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin under the patronage of Marc Jacobs.
Early life and education
[edit]Kiesel was born near Leipzig, Germany. Before studying fashion design, she completed a tailor apprenticeship in Leipzig. She later studied fashion design at the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee, graduating in 2011.[1]
A profile in Die Zeit described Kiesel's early interest in clothing as a means of self-expression and noted that she had completed her education at the Berlin Weißensee art school shortly before receiving wider attention in the fashion industry.[2]
Career
[edit]Kiesel gained broader attention in 2011 when she won the Designer for Tomorrow by Peek & Cloppenburg Düsseldorf award for her graduate collection, Baukasten Individualisten 12/6/24. The award was presented during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, with Marc Jacobs serving as patron and jury chair.[3][4]
Her winning collection was noted for strong colour contrasts, geometric forms and a modular design concept. Gala described the collection as being shaped by contrasting colour combinations, geometric forms and strict cuts, while Fashion.at reported that the collection used modules that could be combined individually.[4][5]
As part of the award programme, Kiesel received support for a solo presentation at the following Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. In January 2012, she presented her first runway collection in Berlin. Die Zeit described the collection as colourful and wearable, while Frankfurter Rundschau reported that her first solo show at the Brandenburg Gate included around 30 outfits under the title Support your local heroes.[2][6]
British Vogue covered Berlin Fashion Week in July 2011 and reported that Marc Jacobs announced Kiesel as the winner of the Designer for Tomorrow award, describing her collection as colourful and concept-driven.[7]
Kiesel subsequently continued developing collections under her own label, KIESEL. According to Not Just A Label, the label began in 2011 and its collections included Baukasten Individualisten, Support your local Heroes, Vom Bauen von Mode and Candyland.[1] Her collection Vom Bauen von Mode was presented in connection with the Goethe-Institut in St. Petersburg.[8]
In a 2013 article, Der Tagesspiegel described Kiesel as one of the notable discoveries of the young Berlin fashion scene. The article discussed her constructivist-inspired collection Vom Bauen von Mode, her interest in visual art and museums, and the difficulties faced by young designers in Berlin. It also reported that she worked part-time as a lecturer at ESMOD Berlin.[9]
Design style
[edit]Kiesel's work has been associated with modular construction, geometric forms and strong colour contrasts. Her Baukasten concept, meaning a building-block or modular system, became a recurring feature of her collections.[2][9]
Fashion coverage has also linked her designs to Bauhaus and Constructivist influences. ModaCycle reviewed her 2012 presentation and described her design approach as conceptually convincing, noting visual references to Bauhaus traditions and artists such as Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky.[10]
