Alexandra Doten is an American science communicator and former space industry analyst.

Early life and education

[edit]

Doten graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2018 with a degree in human and organizational development. While at Vanderbilt, she interned with NASA for two summers. She has cited Vanderbilt astronomy professor, David Weintraub, as an influence on her interest in communicating science.[1]

Career

[edit]

After graduating, Doten worked in communications at NASA and later held positions involving space communications, including work as a space analyst at Overlook Systems Technologies and a communications position at the U.S. Space Force. [2]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Doten began creating astronomy content on social media after in-person speaking engagements were disrupted.[1]

In 2024, Doten was included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the Social Media category.[2][3]

2024 Milky Way video

[edit]

In August 2024, Doten received media attention after publishing a TikTok video explaining why complete images of the Milky Way are artistic representations rather than photographs taken from outside the galaxy.[4][5][6]
