Alexander Brem (born 1979 in Bad Kötzting) is a German business and management scholar. He holds the endowed Chair of Entrepreneurship in Technology and Digitalization at the University of Stuttgart, where he directs the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Science, and has served as Vice Rector for Transfer and International Affairs since 1 October 2024.[1]
Education and early career
[edit]After completing a diploma degree in business administration in 2004, Brem worked as a research associate at the Chair of Industrial Management at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg (FAU). Following his doctorate in autumn 2007, he served as managing director and consultant at VEND consulting GmbH, a firm he had co-founded in 2004.
From 2011 to 2014 he held a junior professorship in idea and innovation management at FAU. He subsequently headed the interdisciplinary section "Innovation and Design Engineering" as Professor of Technology and Innovation Management at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Sønderborg, Denmark, until December 2016. From 2016 to December 2019 he held the Chair of Technology Management at FAU.
University of Stuttgart
[edit]Since January 2020, Brem has been director of the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Science and holder of a chair in entrepreneurship in technology and digitalization at the University of Stuttgart, endowed by the Mercedes-Benz Fund of the Stifterverband.[2] The professorship forms part of the Cyber Valley Baden-Württemberg initiative.[3]
Research
[edit]Brem's research interests include technology-oriented innovation management, creativity and entrepreneurship.
He has for a number of years been ranked among the most research-active business and management scholars in the German-speaking countries,[4][5][6][7] and among the most highly cited researchers in his field internationally.[8][9]
As of July 2026 his publications had been cited approximately 26,800 times according to Google Scholar.[10]
In 2025 the University of Southern Denmark awarded him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his international and interdisciplinary approach, in particular his work connecting the engineering sciences with business and management studies.[11]
Editorial work
[edit]Brem was editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Innovation and Technology Management from 2018 to 2021,[12] and previously served for four years in the same role at the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing.[13][14] Since 2023 he has been an editor of the IEEE Engineering Management Review[15] and of Technological Forecasting and Social Change.[16]
Other roles
[edit]Brem was appointed Honorary Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Mads Clausen Institute of SDU with effect from 1 May 2017;[17] the appointment was extended for a further five years in 2022 at the Department of Technology and Innovation.[18]
Since January 2021 he has chaired the supervisory board of Technologie-Lizenz-Büro (TLB) der Baden-Württembergischen Hochschulen GmbH in Karlsruhe. In January 2025 he was appointed to the board of the Institute for Microelectronics Stuttgart. He is also a member of the research directorate of the InnovationCampus Mobility of the Future (ICM), a joint initiative of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the University of Stuttgart.[19]
Alongside his academic work, he is deputy chair of the innovation association quer.kraft e.V., which promotes exchange between academia and industry.
