Alex AI (formerly Apriora, Inc.) is an American artificial intelligence company headquartered in San Francisco, California, that develops an AI-powered recruiting platform. The company's flagship product is a voice and video AI agent, also named Alex, that conducts autonomous phone and video screens on behalf of employers.

History

[edit]

Alex AI was founded in 2023 under the name Apriora by Aaron Wang and John Rytel.

The company participated in Y Combinator's Winter 2024 batch..[1], and shortly afterward raised a $2.8 million seed round led by 1984 Ventures[2]. In 2025, the company rebranded from Apriora to Alex AI, adopting the domain alex.com, which Wang has publicly described as a six-figure acquisition[3].

In September 2025, Alex announced a $17 million Series A round led by Peak XV Partners, with participation from Y Combinator and Uncorrelated Ventures, as well as several chief human resources officers from Fortune 500 companies[4][5][6][7]. The round brought the company's total funding to approximately $20 million.

Product

[edit]

The Alex platform is an AI "recruiter" that automates the early stages of the hiring funnel with AI interviews, scheduling, resume screening, and identity- and fraud-detection.

Integrations and partnerships

[edit]

The platform integrates with major applicant tracking systems and automates recruiting workflows. Alex partners with Workday Recruiting to provide an AI recruiter plug-in[8] and with Remote Recruit[9].

Funding

[edit]
Round Date Amount Lead investor(s)
Seed 2024 $2.8 million 1984 Ventures
Series A September 2025 $17 million Peak XV Partners

Other investors include Y Combinator, Uncorrelated Ventures, and angel investors Tim Sackett, Kris Fredrickson, and Dalton Caldwell. Wang and Rytel used a five-slide pitch deck to secure its seed round, which was later published in Business Insider[10].

Reception

[edit]

Alex is one of several "AI recruiter" startups attempting to automate the top of the hiring funnel. Forbes profiled the company in May 2024 and explored the advantages and drawbacks of AI recruiters on the recruiting profession and candidate experience[11]. Wang appeared on CNBC in December 2024 to discuss how candidates should approach AI interviews. Wang said the main factors for doing well in an AI interview were a stable internet connection and the ability to discuss one's relevant skills and experience[12].

Debate over automated interviewing

[edit]

While investors report seeing AI interviews as an "inevitability"[4], broader commentary has raised questions about candidate experience and bias in fully automated interviewing. In a 2025 article, Futurism spoke with a job seeker who scheduled, what he believed to be, a screening interview with a recruiter. Partway through the interview, he realized that his counterpart was an AI (Alex), not a human recruiter. The experience resulted in concern and skepticism for the job seeker, especially about transparency and consent in AI-led screening[13]

Compliance and data protection

[edit]

Certifications. Alex states that its platform is SOC 2 Type II certified and GDPR compliant.

Candidate data and PII handling. Alex has a PII Transcription Cleaning feature that automatically redacts personally identifying information from interview transcripts after each session.

Ethical AI principles. Alex publishes a set of ethical-AI commitments that govern how its scoring and decision-support tools are designed:[14]

  • Transcript-only grading. Candidates are evaluated on the textual content of what they say, not on tone of voice, accent, or visual cues.
  • Standardized, weighted scoring. All candidates for a given role are scored against the same rubric and criteria. Role-specific weightings are configured by the customer rather than applied opaquely by the model.
  • Transparency and explainability. Every interview produces a structured report showing what was scored, the underlying rubric, and overlays for cheat- and fraud-detection signals.
  • Human oversight. Hiring outcomes are routed to a human reviewer rather than allowing the system to make a final hiring decision autonomously.
  • Integrity signals as support, not verdicts. Cheat- and fraud-detection outputs are surfaced as flags and sub-scores attached to the candidate's report, leaving the final judgment to the human recruiter.

Regulatory context. Alex's AI products are subject to a growing body of employment-AI regulation, including the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's guidance on algorithmic hiring tools, New York City's Local Law 144 governing automated employment decision tools, the Illinois Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act, Colorado's AI Act, and the European Union's AI Act, which classifies employment AI as "high-risk."
