Alberto Belli is a Mexican film and television director based in Los Angeles, California. He first gained attention in 2013 for viral comedy videos including For Your Consideration and It's Not Porn... It's HBO, before directing the horror-comedy film Gatlopp (2022), the Disney Channel/Disney+ film The Naughty Nine (2023), and the Paramount+/Nickelodeon film Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado (2025). He has also directed episodes of the Netflix series The House of Flowers (La Casa de las Flores), the Disney Channel series Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion, and the Prime Video series Upload; served on the "Wall of the World" judging panel of the CBS competition series The World's Best; and has directed advertising campaigns for brands including Visa, Hyundai, and Snickers.[1][2][3]

Early life and education

Belli was born in Mexico to Italian parents.[4][5] Before working in film, he studied computer science.[6][7] He later moved from Mexico to Los Angeles to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in directing at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he received the John Huston directing merit scholarship.[6][7] Two of his student short films, Zombo and The Case of the Missing Garden Gnome, won College Television Awards from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.[4]

Early career and viral videos

In January 2013, Belli directed the comedy short For Your Consideration, starring Emma Fitzpatrick, which parodied Anne Hathaway's Academy Award campaign for her role in Les Misérables; the video drew coverage from The Hollywood Reporter and NBC's Today.[8][9][10] Later that year, he directed the viral comedy short It's Not Porn... It's HBO, which drew several million views online and led Belli to sign with the production company Accomplice Media for advertising representation.[4][11]

In 2014, It's Not Porn... It's HBO earned Belli the Young Director Award as part of the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors' Showcase at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.[12][13] The following year, Ad Age reported that Belli had signed with Dapper, the comedy division of Believe Media, noting that he had "recently helmed spots for Tide and BCBG Max Azria."[12]

Television

Belli directed episodes of the Netflix telenovela The House of Flowers beginning in 2018.[14] In 2019, he served as the Mexico representative on the "Wall of the World" panel of experts on the CBS reality competition series The World's Best, hosted by James Corden; Adweek profiled his advertising career in connection with the appearance, describing him as "responsible for several viral advertising hits."[3] He later directed episodes of the Prime Video series Upload.[2] In 2021, Belli received the Best New Filmmaker award at the Best of NFMLA Awards, presented by NewFilmmakers Los Angeles.[15][16] In 2022, he directed an episode of the Disney Channel series Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion.[1]

Film

In 2019, Belli directed the short science-fiction film After Life Vacation, written by Maria Brasero, which had its virtual premiere in a program presented with NewFilmmakers Los Angeles during the COVID-19 pandemic.[17]

Belli's feature directorial debut, Gatlopp (also released as Gatlopp: Hell of a Game), a horror-comedy about a supernatural drinking game, was distributed by XYZ Films and premiered on HBO Max in June 2022.[18] On the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, 80 percent of 15 critics' reviews of the film are positive, and on Metacritic it holds a score of 69 out of 100, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[18][19] The Guardian described it as an entertaining, low-budget take on the Jumanji formula, and Polygon praised its horror-tinged spin on the same premise.[20][21]

In 2023, Belli directed The Naughty Nine, a Christmas-set heist comedy for Disney Channel and Disney+, starring Winslow Fegley and Danny Glover, from a screenplay by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas; Deadline reported on Glover's casting as Santa Claus ahead of the film's premiere.[22] The film drew press coverage around its November 2023 premiere, including interviews with Belli about the production.[23][24][25] The Naughty Nine was nominated for Outstanding Fiction Special at the 2025 Children's and Family Emmy Awards, losing to The Velveteen Rabbit.[26][27][28]

In 2025, Belli directed Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado, the second live-action film in the Dora the Explorer franchise, for Paramount+ and Nickelodeon.[1] Written by JT Billings and starring Samantha Lorraine and Gabriel Iglesias, the film was shot on location in Colombia and released on July 2, 2025, to generally positive reviews, holding a 92 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 12 critics.[29] Writing in Variety, Carlos Aguilar called it a "flawed family-friendly movie" with value beyond its shortcomings, while Cath Clarke of The Guardian described it as an "inoffensive adventure story."[30][31]

Advertising

Throughout his career, Belli has directed advertising campaigns for brands including Visa, Hyundai, Snickers, Tide, and BCBG Max Azria.[12][32] His short-form and commercial work has screened at festivals including SXSW, HollyShorts, and the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, where he won the Young Director Award in 2014.[12][32]
