Ajay Mohapatra (born 21 July 1971) is an Indian writer from Odisha who writes in the Odia language. He is known for his short stories, novels and plays.
Early life and education
[edit]Mohapatra was born on 21 July 1971 in Odisha, India. He is an engineer by profession and holds a master's degree in Civil Engineering as well as a master's degree in literature with a specialization in the Odia language.
Literary career
[edit]Mohapatra writes primarily in Odia and has worked across several literary forms, including short stories, novels and drama. His writing explores human relationships, social circumstances, emotions, expectations, illusions and disillusionment. His narrative style has been described as simple and direct, with an emphasis on human situations and relationships.
According to published biographical material accompanying his English-language books, Mohapatra has authored numerous books, including collections of short stories, novels and plays, as well as works related to engineering and Vastu Shastra.
His works include the short-story collection Grandpa and the Lie, published in English translation in 2022. The collection contains twenty-one stories originally written in Odia and translated into English.
His novella collection The Orphan and Incarnation was published in English translation by Black Eagle Books in 2022. The book contains two novellas dealing with social and relationship issues.
Other work
[edit]Some of Mohapatra's stories have been adapted for television, telefilms and theatre. Published biographical material credits him with television work associated with ETV and OTV. A 2016 report by The Times of India also documented a stage production based on his short story Pabitra Papa.
Several of his works have been translated into English and other Indian languages. His literary work has also been included in publications introducing Odia literature to English-language readers.
