Air Greenland Flight 3205 was a regional flight from Kangerlussuaq to Ilulissat. On January 29, 2014, the aircraft had a landing gear collapse and overran the runway while landing at Ilulissat Airport. All 15 people on board survived, whilst 3 passengers were hospitalized and one suffered minor injuries.[1] The aircraft was later written off.[2][3]
Background
[edit]Aircraft
[edit]The aircraft involved in the accident was a de Havilland Canada Dash 8-202 registered as OY-GRI and manufactured in 1997.[2]
Occupants
[edit]The aircraft had a total of 15 people on board, twelve passengers and three crew members. The pilot was 38 years old, and had a total of 4201 flight hours, of which 739 were on the Dash 8. The first officer was 41 years old, and had a total of 1592 flight hours, of which 1022 on this aircraft type.[2][1]
Accident
[edit]As the aircraft was landing at the Iluissat Airport, at 8:43 am local time, it touched down hard, causing the left main landing gear collapsed. This caused the plane to go off course and nose-dive left side of the runway, where it continued until the aircraft collided with the Precision Approach Path Indicator. The plane then exited the runway perimeter and fell down a 10 meters high slope.[4][5] High winds, up to 70 km/h, were present in the area at the time of the accident.[6] All 15 people on board survived the crash, but four were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. The pilots evacuated the aircraft independently through an emergency hatch in the cockpit, while the flight attendant and passengers needed help from outside to open a jammed emergency door.[2][1] The de Havilland Canada Dash 8-202 suffered substantial damage to its nose section, its wings and its fuselage, and had its gear sheared off; the plane was eventually written off.[7]
Investigation
[edit]Danish authorities launched an investigation into the accident, and later published their final report in October 2014. According to the investigation conditions of high crosswinds were present at the airport at the time of the accident. The crew didn't follow a stabilised approach adequate to those conditions, and instead descended fast and landed hard, causing the landing gear to collapse on touchdown. The pilots then continued to use rudder and didn't activate the thrust reverser, during the landing roll, causing a loss of directional control and eventual runway excursion. The report described the pilots as being in a mental condition of "wanting to land at all costs" and over-focused on their task ignoring weather bulletins and other communications they received.[8][2][1]
Aftermath
[edit]After the accident Air Greenland modified its standard operation procedures to improve cockpit resource management. Modifications were applied to the procedures regarding landing in crosswinds, and a specific training was introduced for landing at airport considered particularly difficult, like Ilulissat Airport.[3]
