Aiping Yu is a Canadian chemical engineer and professor at the University of Waterloo. She is a University Research Chair in the Department of Chemical Engineering and works on nanomaterials, energy storage and multifunctional polymer composites.[1][2]
Yu's research includes the synthesis and processing of carbon-based and two-dimensional nanomaterials, including carbon nanotubes, graphene and MXene materials. Her work has applications in energy-storage devices, supercapacitors and polymer composites.[3][4]
Early life and education
[edit]Yu studied chemical engineering at Nanjing University of Technology, where she received her bachelor's degree. She subsequently completed a master's degree in chemical engineering at East China University of Science and Technology in 2002.[1]
In 2008, Yu received a PhD in chemical and environmental engineering from the University of California, Riverside.[1]
Career
[edit]Yu joined the University of Waterloo in 2009 as a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering.[2] Her research has focused on the development and engineering of nanomaterials for energy storage and multifunctional materials.
She has directed research laboratories concerned with carbon nanomaterials and their applications in energy storage and composite materials. Her research has included carbon nanotubes, graphene and other nanostructured materials for supercapacitors, batteries and polymer composites.[3]
In 2022, the University of Waterloo appointed Yu as a University Research Chair. The university described her research as focusing on energy storage and polymer composites and noted her work with carbon nanotubes, graphene and MXene materials.[2]
Research
[edit]Yu's research focuses on the synthesis, processing and functionalization of nanomaterials and their use in energy and engineering applications.[1] Her work includes carbon nanotubes and graphene, as well as two-dimensional materials such as MXenes.[3]
One area of her research is energy storage. Her group has investigated nanomaterials for supercapacitors and batteries, including materials intended to improve energy density, charging performance and service life.[4]
Yu has also studied the use of nanomaterials in polymer composites. These materials can be engineered for properties including mechanical strength, electrical conductivity and electromagnetic-interference shielding.[1][3]
Her research has included applications of graphene and other carbon nanomaterials in engineering systems. A 2020 profile by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada described her work on graphene-based materials for supercapacitors and protective polymer coatings.[4]
Yu has also investigated MXene materials and their potential applications in energy storage and other technologies.[3]
