Draft:Ahn Jun-ha

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ahn Jun-ha is a South Korean Film director, Composer, Music director, and Pianist. He began playing the piano at the age of 7 and grew up receiving an education in Western classical music, jazz, and Korean traditional music.

Starting with winning the performance category of an international contest hosted by the world-renowned audio company Shure in 2009, he began his career as a composer and music director in the fields of film, advertising, and performance. In 2010 and 2011, he was recognized for his talent as a music director for two independent films, receiving the Special Award at the 10th Asiana International Short Film Festival and an official invitation to the Busan International Film Festival (AFA). He also contributed to the film's achievement of 10 million viewers by participating in the music production for *Miracle in Cell No. 7*.

In 2013, with the aim of bringing greater public attention to dance, Ahn Jun-ha released the album ROM (Records of Movement). Through the project, he sought to create a broader connection between music and contemporary dance in Korea.

In 2017, Ahn Jun-ha simultaneously performed various creative roles, including composition, performance, and music direction, in a convergence performance project held at the Asia Culture Center (ACC). His ability to independently execute multiple aspects of the work demonstrated the breadth of his artistic capabilities.

He subsequently composed and conducted the music for the ballet ≪Human≫ and the contemporary dance piece ≪Like Family≫ with the support of the Arts Council Korea. Both works premiered at major venues in Korea, including the Seoul Arts Center, ARKO Arts Center, and the Seoul Arts Center, and were acclaimed as notable new works at the time.

Ahn later expanded his work into large-scale cultural and public projects, composing and directing music for the opening ceremonies of major national events, including the 40th Anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, the Centenary of the March 1st Movement and the Korean Provisional Government, and the Busan Port Festival.

He has also collaborated with spatial art companies and media art organizations, participating in the creation of interdisciplinary works incorporating kinetic art and mechanical systems.

In 2019, created TRACE of SOUND, followed by SPACE of SOUND in 2020. For both projects, he was directly involved in concept development, design, direction, and performance. The projects received favorable evaluations from the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, leading to multi-year performance support.

Since 2020, He has also established himself as an innovative Movie director specializing in cultural and performing arts films, developing a distinctive approach that pushes beyond conventional forms of performance documentation.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when the performing arts industry faced unprecedented challenges, he gained particular recognition for his direction of performance films. Rather than simply documenting performances from a fixed or conventional perspective, he developed a more sensory and cinematic visual language, attracting attention within the industry.

He subsequently directed visual productions for major Korean national performing arts organizations, including the National Theater of Korea, National Dance Company of Korea, and National Changgeuk Company of Korea. Through these projects, he explored ways of capturing the traditional beauty, physicality, and dynamism of Korean performing arts through a contemporary cinematic perspective.

His approach, which combines traditional Korean art forms with contemporary visual aesthetics, has helped make traditional performance more accessible to wider audiences while expanding the visual and expressive possibilities of performing arts.

Ahn's visual direction is characterized by an emphasis on the depth and meaning of the performance itself, while creating a visual environment in which movement, stage design, visual art, and music are seamlessly integrated.

He employs a range of visual techniques—including abstract and modern compositions, slow motion, and high-angle cinematography—to create a distinctly cinematic visual language and dynamic atmosphere.

Today, Ahn Jun-ha continues to work across music and sound, while also expanding his practice as a performance director and artistic director. His work explores the relationship between music, sound, visual space, movement, and emotion across a range of artistic formats.
