Active D-Lighting is an image processing and exposure optimization technology developed by Nikon for use in its digital cameras. It is designed to improve photographs taken in high-contrast lighting conditions by preserving highlight detail while brightening shadow areas.[1]

The feature is primarily intended for scenes with strong backlighting, bright skies, or subjects positioned in shadow. It is available on many Nikon DSLR, mirrorless camera, and compact digital camera models.

History

The Nikon D3 and Nikon D300, both released in 2007, were the first Nikon DSLRs to feature Active D-Lighting, allowing real-time, in-camera highlight and shadow adjustment during shooting. Earlier forms of Nikon's standard D-Lighting post-processing function had appeared in Coolpix compact cameras and the Nikon D80, but Active D-Lighting marked the first implementation integrated directly into the exposure process.

Overview

Active D-Lighting works by adjusting exposure at the time an image is captured and then applying image processing to balance tonal range. This helps reduce loss of detail in bright highlights and dark shadows that may occur in scenes with uneven lighting.

Unlike Nikon's earlier D-Lighting feature, which is applied after an image has been taken, Active D-Lighting functions during image capture.

Settings

Depending on camera model, Active D-Lighting may offer several selectable strength levels, commonly including:

  • Low
  • Normal
  • High
  • Extra High
  • Auto

The Auto setting allows the camera to determine the amount of correction based on scene contrast.

Usage

Active D-Lighting is commonly used for:

  • Outdoor portraits with bright backgrounds
  • Landscape photography with bright skies and dark foregrounds
  • Indoor scenes with windows or strong light sources
  • Street photography in mixed lighting

Some photographers disable the feature when maximum contrast or fully manual post-processing control is desired.

Relationship to D-Lighting

D-Lighting is Nikon's in-camera editing function that brightens underexposed areas after a photograph has been captured. Active D-Lighting differs by making tonal adjustments during exposure and image processing at the time of capture.

Reception

The feature has generally been regarded as a useful built-in solution for handling difficult lighting conditions, particularly for JPEG shooters who prefer minimal post-processing.
