Abortive Gasp was a German electro-industrial and EBM duo formed in Hamburg in 1988 by vocalist Tim Paal and instrumentalist Harry Luehr. The project was active until December 1989 and has been associated with the local "Hamburg bunker bands" scene.[1]

History

[edit]

Abortive Gasp was founded by Tim Paal (vocals) and Harry Luehr (synthesizers and sequencers), occasionally supported by guest musicians. Within the electronic body music and independent scene the duo was characterised by a high degree of improvisation as well as early use of dub. Because of their apolitical stance they were considered controversial in the local scene.[1]

The band released several cassette albums between 1988 and 1989. Songs such as "Church Is Empty" and "Psychgod" received airplay on radio stations in the United States, Belgium and Australia.[2] Reviews by music journalists including Brian Duguid were generally positive.[3]

Their final performance took place in December 1989 at the Kir club in Hamburg as a support act for the Slovenian group Borghesia.[4] The project disbanded shortly afterwards.

In 2022 a short documentary titled Nothing New But Abortive Gasp about the band was released,[1] which received a revised re-release in 2025.[5]

Musical style

[edit]

Abortive Gasp’s music combined elements of electro-industrial and electronic body music with a relatively high degree of improvisation. Contemporary descriptions noted experimental approaches and occasional pastiches of other industrial and EBM acts.[6]

Reception

[edit]

The band received limited contemporary coverage in the German independent scene. Some international radio exposure was reported. Later reviews and a 2022 short documentary have discussed the group’s place in the Hamburg electro-industrial scene of the late 1980s.[1]

The group is mentioned among German electro-industrial acts in the Wikipedia article on Electro-industrial.
