4Front Credit Union (or 4Front) is a Michigan member-owned credit union, headquartered in Traverse City, Michigan, chartered and insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).

History

[edit]

4Front Credit Union was formed when two credit unions merged.[2] In 1954, the Governmental Employees Credit Union, which would become Members Credit Union, opened its doors in Traverse City. Three years later, Bay Winds Federal Credit Union, formerly Saint Mary Catholic Credit Union, would open in Charlevoix.

After 60 years, the credit unions' volunteer board of directors announced their intent to partner. After a vote of each respective credit union's membership, 4Front Credit Union was formed and officially opened its doors as a single institution on January 2, 2015.[3]

In 2019, 4Front opened a branch in Cadillac, MI, featuring ATMs with VideoTeller capabilities in the lobby and drive-through.[4]

In 2021, 4Front Credit Union announced that it had purchased three former Citibank buildings and would open branches in West Michigan, in Muskegon, Holland, and Zeeland.[5]

In early 2023, 4Front Credit Union announced the acquisition of Old Mission Bank.[6] 4Front Credit Union acquired all assets and assumed liabilities of Old Mission Bank, including branches in Sault Ste. Marie and Pickford, along with the Old Mission customers and employees. The acquisition was officially completed in September 2023.

In late 2025, 4Front Credit Union announced its intention to purchase Horizon Bank’s branch location in Charlevoix, Michigan.[6] With this purchase, the credit union acquired the building, along with Horizon customers and employees. The conversion was completed in mid-April 2026.

Organization

[edit]

4Front Credit Union is a credit union chartered in the state of Michigan with the National Credit Union Association (NCUA). 4Front, like all credit unions, is governed by a volunteer board of directors that is elected by its membership. 4Front also has a separate subsidiary, 4Front Investment Services, which operates as a credit union organization (CUSO).

Membership

[edit]

As a state-chartered credit union, 4Front’s membership is limited to:

  • Live, work, worship, or attend school in the state of Michigan, or be an immediate family member of an existing member of 4Front Credit Union
  • At least 18 years of age or have a guardian present
  • Be a legal US resident
  • Have a Social Security number
  • Have a government-issued ID

Services

[edit]

4Front Credit Union operates 20 branches across Michigan, from Zeeland in the Lower Peninsula to Sault Ste. Marie, in the Upper Peninsula as of January 1, 2026. In addition, 4Front is part of the CO-OP ATM network, which includes more than 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide.

4Front Foundation

[edit]

In 2021, 4Front Credit Union introduced the 4Front Foundation.[7] Each year, the 4Front Foundation offers grants and scholarships to those across Michigan.[8]

The 4Front Foundation grant cycle opens each fall and is offered to local Michigan non-profits that align with its core pillars of giving: Financial Relief, Community Building, and Youth Empowerment.[9]

The foundation opens its scholarship cycle each spring to support Michigan residents aged 17 and older pursuing careers in the skilled trades. The scholarship provides financial assistance to those pursuing an apprenticeship, a 2-year trade degree, a 4-year trade degree, or certifications in their existing field. The scholarship funds may also be used for tuition, tools, and certifications.[10]

Awards and recognitions

[edit]

4Front Credit Union has been named to Corp! Magazine's Best and Brightest Companies to Work For in the Nation list annually from 2021 to 2025.[11][11][11][11][11] It has also received Northern Michigan's Red Hot Best award in the credit union or financial services category each year over the same period.[12][13][14][15][16]

In 2022 and 2023, the credit union received Tekkie Awards from the Michigan Bankers Association, recognizing its marketing and lending technology.[17][18] In 2022, 4Front received the Purposeful Banker Award for Most Innovative Financial Institution (Consumer).[19]
