The 2026 Siverek school shooting occurred on 14 April 2026 at the Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Siverek, Şanlıurfa Province, southeastern Turkey. A 18/19-year-old former student, identified as Ömer Ket, entered the school and opened fire indiscriminately with a shotgun, wounding 16 people before dying by suicide when cornered by police.
Background
[edit]The perpetrator was identified as Ömer Ket (born 2007), an 18-year-old former student of the Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School. He had attended the school for one year in the ninth grade before switching to distance education. Ket had no prior criminal record.
The attack was inspired by the Columbine High School massacre, as shown in a post on his Instagram account.[1]
Shooting
[edit]The attacker arrived at the school around 9:30 a.m. local time and began firing randomly. He wounded 10 students, 4 teachers, 1 police officer, and 1 canteen employee. Most injuries were minor to moderate; a small number were transferred to a larger hospital in Şanlıurfa for further treatment. No other fatalities occurred.
Security footage captured the attacker firing inside the school corridors.
Aftermath
[edit]The school was evacuated, and education at the institution was suspended for four days. Teacher unions announced work stoppages in protest. Authorities launched an investigation into the motive, the story is still developing.
