David Jeng (born 17 January 1992)[1][2] is a Gambian entrepreneur and intellectual property expert,[3] who is the youngest person to ever serve on the board of The Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry.[3][4][5]

He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute for Management and Leadership[6] and Mandela Washington Fellow.[7][8] He was named twice as one of the 100 Most Influential Young Africans by the Pan African Leadership Foundation in 2024 and 2025.[9][10]

Early life and education

David Jeng was born in Banjul, the capital of the Republic of The Gambia. He received his primary education at Methodist Preparatory School before proceeding to Gambia Methodist Academy, where he completed his secondary schooling.[1]

Jeng pursued higher education at the University of the Gambia, where he was awarded a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and Finance. He subsequently undertook postgraduate studies in Intellectual Property Law, earning a Master's degree through the joint WIPO-ARIPO-Africa University programme.[11] In addition, he completed academic coursework in Patent Law and Global Public Health at Harvard Law School.[12][13]

Career

Jeng began his professional career as a Business Support Coordinator at Startup Incubator Gambia,[14] where he facilitated the development of early-stage ventures. He established The Gambia's first business incubation hub, designed accelerator programs, mentored startups, and contributed to the creation of more than 180 jobs between 2015 and 2018.[15] In 2018, he founded Bliss Executives[16] a management consultancy firm focused on supporting small enterprise growth across Africa, and also serves as managing director of Chapman Xpress Financial Services.[1] On 2 September 2022, David was elected to the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) at its Annual General Meeting, and was re-elected in 2025. He was also selected as a recipient of the Africa's Under 40 CEOs Awards.[17][18][19]

Jeng serves on the Board of Directors of the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry,[4] is a member of the National Intellectual Property Council of The Gambia, and sits on the Board of the President's International Award Scheme.[20] He is a member and chairperson of the University of the Gambia Alumni Association,[21] Strategy Chair of the Next Einstein Forum Community of Scientist Executives,[22] and a founding member of #MyAfCFTA, a Pan-African initiative supporting implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.[23] He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management and Leadership. Since 2021, he has served as an International Intellectual Property Expert for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), where he has led capacity-building programs including the IP+ Accelerator Program for SMEs in The Gambia and the IP Agribusiness Program for Women Entrepreneurs in Africa.[3][24][25][26][27]

  • Africa's Under 40 CEO Award (2025) – Presented by Mayorkings Agency, recognizing outstanding young CEOs making significant contributions across Africa[28]
  • 100 Most Influential Young Africans (2024 & 2025) – Awarded by the Pan African Leadership Foundation in recognition of his influence in entrepreneurship, innovation, and leadership across the continent.[29]
  • Most Influential Global Leader of the Year (2024) – Presented by the Pan African Youth Leadership Foundation for his international impact in entrepreneurship and innovation.[29]
  • Mandela Washington Fellowship (2024) – Selected as a fellow under the U.S. Department of State's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). While this is a prestigious fellowship rather than a traditional award, it is widely regarded as a significant honor.[30]
  • Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management and Leadership (2022) – Conferred the professional designation of Fellow (FCIML) in recognition of his leadership and professional achievements.[30]
  • Young Leader of the Year (2022) – Awarded by the West African Leadership and Empowerment Centre for his contributions to enterprise development and leadership.[30]
  • Ambassador for the Promotion of Science, Technology and Innovation in Africa (2018) – Appointed by the Next Einstein Forum to promote science, technology, and innovation across Africa.[30]
  • University of The Gambia Debate Association (UTGDA) Leadership Award (2015) – Recognized as one of only six individuals honored for exceptional contributions to the University of The Gambia.[30]
