David William "Gump" Ariail (December 29, 1910 – February 10, 2001) was a college football and basketball player.
Auburn
[edit]Ariail was an All-Southern end for the Auburn Tigers of Auburn University.[1][2][3] He was a teammate of College Football Hall of Fame inductee Jimmy Hitchcock. One source wrote, "Other than Jimmy Hitchcock, back, and "Gump" Arial [sic], end, Auburn has no outstanding players."[4] Ariail would receive passes from halfback Firpo Phipps.[5] He was selected All-American by the "captain's poll," selected by the captains of major college football programs.[6][7]
Ariail was also captain of the basketball team.[8]
