Domar Cabanatan Alviar, also known as DC Alviar, (born June 9, 1979) is a Filipino opinion journalist and faculty union organizer, who currently serves as an associate professor of communication at National University in Manila, Philippines.[2][3][4][5]
There are times when Alviar is interviewed by broadcast and print journalists to explain communication ethics and promote consumer welfare.[6][7]
Early life and education
[edit]Alviar was born in San Pedro, Laguna. He obtained his BA from Adamson University[8] and attended graduate school at the University of the Philippines Open University[9]. He continued his education at UP, defending his doctoral dissertation under the Commission on Higher Education (CHED-SIKAP) scholarship grant.[10][11][12]
Career and advocacy
[edit]As an advocate of workers' rights, Alviar has been vocal about the need for his fellow faculty members at National University to unionize. [13][14][15] As of September 5, 2026, they have been backed up by the Council of Teachers and Staff of Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (CoTeSCUP) and the University of Santo Tomas Faculty Union (USTFU), who issued their respective solidarity statements.[16]
Alviar frequently writes Op-ed pieces at various broadsheets and maintains a column tackling academic matters.[17][18][19]
In his latest scholarly article, Alviar collaborated with researchers from various universities to communicate a cross-country analysis of artificial intelligence adoption, digital infrastructure, and business productivity.[20]

[edit]He announced the death of his journalist-father Rene Alviar in 2022.[22][23]
Alviar is a basketball fan and even wrote organizing issues.[24][25]
