Chet Lo (born 1997) is an American fashion designer who resides in London. He is best known for his eponymous fashion brand, Chet Lo, which puts out collections largely of his signature spiky knitwear. He is also known for his collaborations with brands including Singaporean fashion house Charles & Keith, American lifestyle brand Converse, and app platform Tinder. His outfits have been worn by individuals including American musicians Lizzo, Doja Cat, MGK, and SZA.

Early life

Lo was born in 1997 in New York to a family originally from Hong Kong.[1] After high school, he moved to London, where he attended Central Saint Martins college at the University of Arts London, earning a BA in Knitwear.[2][3] In London, he interned at Proenza Schouler and under designer John Galliano at Maison Margiela.[4] His graduate collection, Cnidaria's Wife, was described as "futuristic" by Vogue Hong Kong.[5]

Career

After his graduation during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lo struggled to find a job, so decided to launch his own label.[2] The label was soon picked up by incubator Fashion East.[6] He also shared an artist residency at The Standard hotel in London with British-American fashion designer Harris Reed.[7]

Specialising in knitwear, his designs are known for their spikes, which are inspired by the texture of the durian fruit, which he compares to armor. Lo's first design incorporating these spikes was a sweater for himself.[8][4] He has cited influences including "old Japanese comics and Godzilla and Ultraman visuals",[5] 1988 film Akira, and anime television series Neon Genesis Evangelion.[9] His designs have been described as futuristic and alien, often with a "bubbly" color scheme.[10][11] Lo has stated the company produces only the exact number of items purchased.[12]

Lo's Fall 2022 line, titled "The Tundra", emphasized warmth. He has described it as "après-chic".[6] His 2023 collection "Bioluminescence" used a darker color palette and took inspiration from the traditional Chinese clothing hanfu.[10] [13] An additional show in 2023, "Bai Sun", was inspired by his Buddhist upbringing and featured a collaboration with tech company Nothing.[14] [15]

His Spring 2024 collection, "Haam Sap", was inspired by Shunga and Chinese erotic art[16] and explored his sexuality as a queer Asian.[17] His Spring/Summer 2025 collection was inspired by his mother, computer scientist Mai-Wah Cheung.[18] His Fall 2026 collection was inspired by a Hong Kong night market and a trip Lo took to Asia with his boyfriend, who had never previously been.[19] The show featured a full night market built inside the venue.[20] Both shows were made to be inclusive to blind guests.[21][20]

In 2024, Lo collaborated with Tinder to create "The Lovestruck Collection", inspired by modern dating and his own dating life.[22][23] His other collaborations include: Converse, to develop footwear for his Fall/Winter 2025 collection, "Modern Antiquity",[24] inspired by traditional Western depictions and misrepresentations of Asian art;[25] Spanish retailer Pull&Bear;[26] furniture brand Rankin Editions for a furniture collection;[27] Charles & Keith to design headbands, purses, and shoes; [8][28] and Capri-Sun to create a limited-edition bag for their juice pouches.[29]

Lo's outfits have been worn by Doja Cat, SZA,[30] Dua Lipa,[31] Zara Larsson, Kylie Jenner,[4] Lizzo,[32] MGK,[33] Chloe Cherry,[34] Michaela Coel, and Willow Smith.[9] His designs featured in Doja Cat's 2021 music video for "Kiss Me More".[35] His 2025 piece "Spiky Boatneck" is in the collection of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.[1]

Lo was listed in Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2022,[36] The Smiley Company Future Positive Creators in 2023,[37] and the Drapers 30 Under 30 in 2025.[38] He has been described as a mainstay at the semi-annual London Fashion Week.[19]

In 2022, Lo accused an unnamed fast fashion brand of copying his designs.[39] Although the brand was not specified, Instagram watchdog Diet Prada claimed it was H&M. This was supported Instagram insinuations made by fellow-designer Harris Reed.[40]

Personal life

Lo resides in Hoxton.[41] He describes his sexuality as queer.[17]
