[edit]Category:Application software is the top of the application software tree and its subcategories contain ALL (all that I've found!) application software categories. Free and non-Free. The purpose of the "Free application software" category is only to gather the free applications subcategories together for the "Free software" subcategory of Category:Software by license.
If "Free application software" is categorized as "Application software" it shows up as a subcategory and that is confusing, making it appear that Free software is kept in a separate tree. It's not, every Free software category is linked to the corresponding not-free category. See, for example, Category:Business software, one of its subcategories will be Category:Free business software. And that's the way it is setup, throughout the application area.
