Carlos Chadwick Castro (20 May 1880 – 5 November 1965) was a Chilean politician, agricultural engineer and farmer who served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile.
A member of the Conservative Party, he represented La Serena, Coquimbo and Elqui from 1912 to 1915. He served on the Permanent Commission of Industry and Agriculture. His work in Congress included proposals on irrigation, reforestation and timber production, as well as legislation concerning the sale of alcoholic beverages.[1]
Biography
[edit]Chadwick was born in La Serena to Roberto Chadwick Amenábar and Manuela Castro Aracena. He attended the Liceo de La Serena and later studied at the Instituto Agrícola de Santiago, graduating as an agricultural engineer in 1901.
Before entering Congress, he was involved in municipal politics in La Serena. He was a municipal councillor from 1909 to 1912 and served as second mayor during the same period. He also acted as first mayor for several months.
Outside politics, Chadwick worked mainly in agriculture and livestock farming. He managed several properties in the Ovalle area and was involved in forestry projects in Coquimbo. He also had mining interests in Andacollo and Antofagasta.
In 1918, he helped establish the Sociedad Ganadera Tongoy and remained its president until 1942. He was also a founder of the Sociedad Agrícola del Norte and served as president of the Compañía Agrícola de Coquimbo in 1923. His other activities included positions in the Consejo Superior de Agricultura and the Sociedad Agronómica.
Chadwick also wrote pamphlets and contributed to newspapers and magazines. He died on 5 November 1965.
