Brian Balch (born July 2, 1982) is an American professional wrestler, promoter, and actor better known by his ring name Bryan Idol. He is currently signed to the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), where he is a former NWA World Television Champion and serves in a corporate capacity as an NWA National Promoter and as the owner of the promotion's NWA Chicago territory.[1]
Professional wrestling career
[edit]International and WWC (2008–2019)
[edit]Idol began his professional wrestling career in January 2008. He established an international reputation, notably competing for the World Wrestling Council (WWC) in Puerto Rico, where he won the WWC Television Championship. His influence was critical in helping to facilitate the working relationship between the WWC and the NWA, marking the first known collaboration between the two promotions in over three decades.[1]
National Wrestling Alliance (2020–present)
[edit]Idol joined the NWA as a full-time talent, quickly expanding his corporate and developmental roles. He holds the position of NWA National Promoter, managing regional territories such as NWA Chicago, and co-founded the Fight The World (FTW) Wrestling Academy in Florida alongside head trainer Natalia Markova.[2]
On February 15, 2024, Idol and NWA President Billy Corgan launched the NWA Chicago and held its first event on March 8, 2024, at Madame ZuZu's Emporium in Highland Park, Illinois.[3][4] Idol achieved his most significant championship success at the 2025 Crockett Cup event on May 17, 2025, at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he captured the NWA World Television Championship.[5]
AEW National Championship controversy
[edit]In November 2025, Idol became the primary NWA spokesperson to publicly address All Elite Wrestling's (AEW) announcement of their new National Championship. Idol's social media posts and media statements asserted that AEW's introduction of the title was an act of deliberate retaliation, stemming from the NWA's concurrent legal dispute with AEW over the trademark for the term "Shockwave."[6] These comments had escalated the controversy and was a major topic across wrestling news outlets.[7][8] On November 24, 2025, AEW quietly abandoned their attempt to trademark "Shockwave".[9][10][11]
Other ventures
[edit]Idol is a multi-hyphenate professional, holding credentials as a SAG actor and model. He appeared in the 2008 movie The Wrestler and is a recurring cast member on the NWA reality television series Billy Corgan's Adventures In Carnyland. Idol also performs as a live stage personality for The Smashing Pumpkins during their worldwide concert tours.[12]
Training Nick Hogan
[edit]Idol's role as the co-founder of the FTW Wrestling Academy gained widespread media attention in late 2025 when it was reported that he was personally training Nick Hogan, the son of wrestling legend Hulk Hogan. The training sparked major speculation across news and sports media that Nick Hogan was preparing for a professional wrestling career.[13][14]
