From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bota is one of the most historically significant and strategically important quarters in Limbe, Cameroon. Bota's development is closely linked to the colonial history of Limbe and the establishment of the Limbe Botanic Garden in 1892, which transformed the area into a center for agricultural research and environmental conservation.[1] Today, Bota has become one of the most visited and vibrant areas in Limbe thanks to its proximity to the ocean, the botanical gardens, wildlife conservation sites, and, the headquarters of the Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC), and other recreational facilities.[2]

History

[edit]

Bota's history is intertwined with the evolution of Victoria, the colonial settlement founded by Alfrd Saker that later became Limbe in May 1982.[3] Gaining prominence during the German colonial period following the creation of the botanic gardens by a team of German horticulturists led by Dr. Paul Rudolph Preuss, Bota saw the experimentation of important tropical crops like cocoa, coffee, rubber, oil palm, banana, and teak.[1] Bota found itself at the center of scientific and agricultural development as the botanical gardan became one of the most important tropical research and consevation institutions in Central Africa.[4]

Location

[edit]

Located within the urban center of the city of limbe and stretching towards the Atlantic coastline, Bota is made of a mainland and multiple islands found in the Limbe I municipality.[5][6] Bota occupies a central position and is surrounded by notable communities like Clerks Quarters (C.Q.), Church Street, Down Beach, New Town, Mile One, Mile two and Ngeme.[7]

Activities and occupation

[edit]

Bota is home to diverse walks of life, ranging from administrative to the most basic of economic activities.[8]

Administratively, it hosts government and public offices.[9] Agro-industrially, Bota hosts the CDC head office, a key center for the coordination of agricultural production activities involving bananas, rubber, palm oil and palm kernel oil.[10]

Tourism is one of the most visible activities in Bota with visitors frequently visiting the Botanical gardens, the Wildlife Center, walking the Bota Hill, and also accessing nearby coastal attractions amd beaches. The area serves as a gateway to many of Limbe's recrreational sites.[11][1] The Limbe Botanic Garden functions as a center for biodiversity conservation, environmental education, scientific research, and public awareness activities.
