Biography

[edit]

Arthur Robert Nathaniel Chatto was born on 5 February 1999,[1] the second son of Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones and Daniel Chatto.[2] He has an older brother, Samuel. On his mother's side, he is a grandchild of Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, and Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, and a great-grandson of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.[3] On his father's side, he is a grandson of actor Tom Chatto.[4] He attended Westminster Cathedral Choir School and Eton College,[5] where he served in the Combined Cadet Force,[6] before going on to study geography at the University of Edinburgh.[5] During his youth, Chatto served as a page to his great-aunt Queen Elizabeth II, carrying the tail of her gown during ceremonies including the knighting of William, Prince of Wales.[7]

At 17, he climbed several mountains in the Alps, including the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, and Gran Paradiso.[8]

Chatto began creating social media posts in 2017, when he was 18, and was quickly dubbed "the next Prince Harry" by The Observer.[9] He was the first member of the royal family to post shirtless pictures,[10] and has been described as "the royal family's resident thirst trapper".[11] In 2019, he hiked the Lochnagar, posting a photo of it.[10] As of 2021, he had more than two hundred thousand followers.[2]

He worked as a personal trainer at Bound Fitness in Edinburgh, a gym that emphasises mental health,[12] and became a brand ambassador for Elliott Brown Watches and mountaineering clothing brand Jotnar.[13]

Chatto spent six months training for a charity row, the Great Britain row challenge,[14] which he completed during COVID with two close friends he was living with as they trained. They were the only team to complete it that year due to COVID.[15] The row took 42 days and covered 2,000 miles. They became the youngest team ever to row around Great Britain,[16] and he became the youngest person to row around the mainland,[17] a record recognised by Guinness World Record.[18] He raised more than £21,000 for the British Red Cross and ocean cleanup charity Just One Ocean.[5]

He was accepted into the Royal Marines Training Program in 2021. After joining, he reduced his attendance at royal events and deleted his social media.[19]

Chatto has commented on the British television series The Crown, saying that it is "only an interpretation" and that he "doesn't let the TV persona mar my judgement of any of them".[20] He plays the bagpipes.[21]

As of July 2026, he is 31st in the line of succession to the British throne.[22]
