Synthesis

The compound can be prepared by a controlled reaction of ammonia, boric acid, and water.[3][4]

Physical properties

The compound forms white crystals soluble in water.[5]

Ammonium pentaborate forms a tetrahydrate H4N · B5O8 · 4H2O[6] and an octahydrate H4N · B5O8 · 8H2O.[7]

Uses

The compound is used to inhibit heat, flame, and corrosion in a variety of industrial applications.[8]
