Alejandro Huneeus García-Huidobro (1874 – 29 June 1935) was a Chilean lawyer, agriculturalist and politician who served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile.
A member of the Conservative Party, Huneeus represented Rancagua, Cachapoal and Maipo for four consecutive terms from 1903 to 1915. During his 1912–1915 term, he was a member of the Permanent Commissions of Social Legislation and War and Navy. He was also a member of the Conservative Commission and his party's Parliamentary Committee.[1]
Huneeus also served as Minister of War and Navy from 15 August 1911 to 23 January 1912.[1]
Biography
[edit]Huneeus was born in Santiago in 1874, the son of Isidoro Huneeus Zegers and Javiera García Huidobro Arlegui. He studied humanities at Colegio San Ignacio and later studied law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the University of Chile, qualifying as a lawyer in June 1898.[1]
In 1902, he published Cuestiones sociales, a work dealing with social issues. That same year, he founded the newspaper La Patria in Rancagua and La Cruz in Peumo, financing both publications himself.[1]
Huneeus was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies for Rancagua, Cachapoal and Maipo for the 1903–1906 term and was reelected for the 1906–1909, 1909–1912 and 1912–1915 terms. His parliamentary work included support for legislation concerning Sunday rest, workers' housing, workplace accidents and secured credit.[1]
In 1913, he traveled through the Americas and Europe. He also served as deputy administrator of the Caja de Huérfanos and was a member of the Centro de Educación Cristiana, the Council of Fine Arts, the Buena Prensa and the Santiago Board of Charity.[1]
In his later years, Huneeus largely withdrew from politics and devoted himself to agriculture on his estate at Hospital. He died in Paris, France, on 29 June 1935.[1]
