Alberto Araya Lampe (17 January 1902 – ?) was a Chilean physician, surgeon, and politician who served as Minister of Public Health and Social Welfare during the second administration of President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo from July to August 1956.[1]
Early life
[edit]Araya was born in Valparaíso, Chile, on 17 January 1902, the son of José Luis Araya and Luisa Lampe. He studied medicine at the University of Chile, graduating in 1927 after completing his thesis, Contribución al estudio de la meningitis cerebroespinal en Chile.[2]
On 19 May 1941, he married French immigrant Marie Madelaine Line de Barre in Santiago.[2]
Political career
[edit]Araya practised medicine in Santiago and was a member of the Santiago Watt Federation, of which he served as president.[2] From 1929 to 1931, he was a member of the Confederación Republicana de Acción Cívica de Obreros y Empleados de Chile (CRAC). He stood unsuccessfully as a candidate for the Chamber of Deputies in Santiago in the 1930 Chilean parliamentary election.[2]
On 4 July 1956, during the second administration of President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, Araya was appointed Minister of Public Health and Social Welfare. He served in the post until 27 August 1956.[1]
