Agrofert is a Czech conglomerate headquartered in Prague. Its companies operate primarily in agriculture, food processing, chemicals and fertilizer production, forestry and timber, agricultural machinery, logistics and transport, and renewable energy. The group operates in more than 20 countries, with significant activities in Central and Western Europe.[4] In 2025, Agrofert reported consolidated revenue of CZK 212.2 billion and employed 28,184 people, including 17,183 in the Czech Republic.[5]

Agrofert was founded in 1993 by businessman and politician Andrej Babiš. Babiš transferred his shares in the company to two trust funds in 2017 following changes to Czech conflict-of-interest law. He became the company's sole shareholder again in October 2025 and transferred all shares to the private trust RSVP Trust in February 2026.[6][7]

Agrofert was founded by Czech state company Petrimex (where Andrej Babiš worked as salesman), on January 25, 1993, and in its current form on July 1, 2000. The company was founded in 1993 by Petrimex.[8] Andrej Babiš has directed the conglomerate until January 2014 and owned it until 2017, he was forced to transfer ownership of the company to two trust funds AB private trust I and AB private trust II controlled by his family and lawyers in order to comply with the new conflict of interest legislation passed by the Parliament.[9]

In 2013, Agrofert acquired the media company Mafra, publisher of the newspapers Mladá fronta DNES, Lidové noviny, as well as the news website iDNES.cz.[10] Later that year, it also acquired Londa, the operator of the radio station Rádio Impuls.[11]

Speculations in January 2014 also indicated that the holding company was considering buying Prima or Nova television.[12]

In June 2022, Borealis agreed to sell its nitrogen business to Agrofert for €810 million. The transaction was completed on 5 July 2023 and included fertilizer, melamine and technical nitrogen operations, production assets in Austria, Germany and France, and a European sales and distribution network.[13]

In September 2023, Agrofert agreed to sell Mafra, Londa and chemical company Synthesia to the investment group Kaprain controlled by Karel Pražák. Following regulatory approvals, the transaction was completed on 1 February 2024.[14][15]

On 15 October 2025, Babiš has once again become the sole owner of Agrofert.[16] On 20 February 2026, Babiš transferred ownership of the company to the private RSVP Trust [cs] fund.[17]

Operations

Agrofert operates across agriculture, food production, chemicals and fertilizers, forestry, machinery, logistics and renewable energy. Its businesses span much of the agricultural supply chain, from fertilizer production and farming to food processing.[18]

Major companies in the group include SKW Piesteritz, a German nitrogen-fertilizer producer; Duslo and Lovochemie, fertilizer and chemical producers in Slovakia and the Czech Republic respectively; DEZA and Precheza, Czech chemical manufacturers; and Fatra, a plastics manufacturer. Agrofert's food businesses include Penam and German bakery group Lieken, as well as meat processor Kostelecké uzeniny and poultry producer Vodňanská drůbež.[19][20]
