Accountable is accounting and tax software for the self-employed and freelancers. Developed by Brussels-based Accountable SA, the platform combines bookkeeping, invoicing, expense management and tax filing. It operates in Belgium and Germany.[1][2]
The software was introduced in Belgium before expanding to Germany in 2020. In 2025, Norwegian software group Visma acquired a minority stake in Accountable SA.[3]
History
[edit]Accountable was develooped in Brussels by Nicolas Quarré, Alexis Eggermont and Hassan Ayed.[4] The software was available in Belgium by 2018, when the company raised €1.7 million in a funding round led by Connect Ventures. Its early features included bank-account integration, invoicing, receipt scanning and tools for managing taxes.[1]
The company entered the German market in April 2020.[5] It raised €5.7 million in Series A financing in 2021, when it reported more than 10,000 users in Belgium and Germany.[6] Additional investment brought the total Series A financing to €10 million in 2022.[7]
In April 2025, Visma acquired a minority stake in the company.[8] It had about 60,000 users and around 60 employees at the time. Belgium remained its largest source of revenue, while Germany was its faster-growing market.[3]
Software and services
[edit]Accountable is designed primarily for freelancers, sole traders and other self-employed. Users can connect bank accounts, record receipts and business expenses, create invoices and prepare tax returns.[2]
In February 2026, Accountable launched an integrated professional bank account in Belgium, allowing banking and accounting functions to be managed from the same platform.[9]
In Germany, Accountable introduced an AI-based tax assistant in October 2023.[10]
Legal dispute over AI tax adviser
[edit]In late 2025, the Berlin Chamber of Tax Advisers (Steuerberaterkammer Berlin) objected to Accountable's use of the term KI-Steuerberater. The chamber argued that the designation could violate German rules protecting the professional title Steuerberater.[11]
Accountable disputed the allegations and announced that it would defend the case.[12] The dispute received wider attention as a test of how professional regulations apply to artificial-intelligence services in regulated occupations.[13] The proceedings remained pending in September 2026.[14]
