Abiola Olubunmi Babatope (née Odeyale; born 27 September 1947) is a Nigerian politician and administrator. She served as a member of the House of Representatives during the Second Nigerian Republic (1979–1983) and has held public service positions. She studied Geology at the University of Ibadan, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1970. She is married to Ebenezer Babatope, a Nigerian politician who served as a federal minister and held leadership positions in the People's Democratic Party (PDP).[1][2]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Abiola Olubunmi Babatope was born on 27 September 1947 in Mushin, Lagos State, Nigeria. She began her early education at Methodist School, Yaba, Lagos, and later attended Wesley School, Oko I, Sagamu, Remo Secondary School, Sagamu, and St. Anne’s School, Ibadan. She obtained the West African School Certificate in 1964 and the Higher School Certificate in 1966. She studied Geology at the University of Ibadan, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in 1970.[1][3]
Career
[edit]After graduating from the University of Ibadan in 1970, Babatope worked as a geologist. She served as a junior geologist from 1971 to 1972, a scouting geologist from 1972 to 1974, and a petroleum geologist from 1974 to 1979 before her election to the House of Representatives in 1979.[3][2]
Political career
[edit]Babatope was elected to the House of Representatives in 1979 on the platform of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), representing Mushin Central II Federal Constituency in Lagos State during the Second Nigerian Republic from 1979 to 1983. Following the end of the Second Republic, she later became a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).[4][5]
Personal life
[edit]Abiola Olubunmi Babatope is married to Ebenezer Babatope, a Nigerian politician and former Minister of Transport. They married in 1972 and have one son and five daughters.[2][6]
