January 1 – Assuming no further extensions to the term of copyrights become law in the interim, works by authors who died in 1960 will enter the public domain in the United Kingdom, the European Union and other life-plus-70 jurisdictions. In the United States, works first published in 1935 are scheduled to enter the public domain under the current 95-year term for published works.[1]
March 31 – Expo 2030 Riyadh will close in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, after running for six months from October 1, 2030. The organizers project more than 42 million visits and participation by 197 countries and 29 international organizations.[6]
April 5 – Comet Bernardinelli–Bernstein is expected to make its closest approach to Earth at approximately 10.1AU (1.5billionkm; 940millionmi). Despite its unusually large estimated nucleus, it will remain far beyond Earth's orbit.[7][8]
May 21 – An annular solar eclipse will occur. The eclipse will be visible in parts of Africa, southern Asia, the East Indies and Australia, with the central annular path crossing portions of Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Tanzania, southern India, Malaysia and Indonesia. The maximum annular phase is predicted to last about 5 minutes 26 seconds.[10]
June – VERITAS, NASA's Venus-mapping mission, is currently planned for launch during a Venus launch opportunity in the 2031–2032 period. The mission is designed to investigate Venus's geology, surface deformation, topography and possible recent volcanic activity using radar and other instruments.[11]
July – The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) is scheduled to arrive at Jupiter and enter the Jovian system. The spacecraft, launched in April 2023, will study Jupiter and its large ocean-bearing moons Ganymede, Callisto and Europa. ESA's current mission calendar gives July 2031 for Jupiter orbit insertion.[12][13]
September–October – The Men's Rugby World Cup will be held in the United States. It will be the first men's Rugby World Cup staged in the United States, and World Rugby's current long-term plan places the men's 2031 and women's 2033 tournaments in the country.[15][16]
December – EnVision, an ESA mission intended to study Venus's interior, surface and atmosphere, was previously associated with a 2031 launch. ESA's more recent project schedule now gives a launch date of 29 May 2032, so the mission should not be listed as a firm 2031 event unless its schedule is subsequently brought forward.[23]
2 World Trade Center (200 Greenwich Street) is expected to be completed. American Express plans to occupy the building as its new global headquarters; the company describes the headquarters as approximately 1,226 feet tall, with nearly 2 million square feet of space and capacity for up to 10,000 employees.[24]
The 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup is planned for the CONCACAF region and is expected to feature 48 teams and 104 matches. The United States, Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica submitted a joint bid; FIFA's 2031 tournament is therefore no longer accurately described simply as a United States–Mexico event. The formal host appointment is subject to FIFA's host-selection process.[26][27]
The AFC Asian Cup 2031 was originally being contested by several potential host associations. However, in March 2026 the Asian Football Confederation discontinued the bidding process for both the 2031 and 2035 editions while it considers aligning the competition with a proposed shift to even-numbered years. Consequently, no host should currently be stated as confirmed for the 2031 tournament.[28]
In Kazakhstan, the transition of the Kazakh language's writing system from the Cyrillic alphabet to the Latin alphabet was originally scheduled to be fully implemented by 2031. The timetable and exact final orthography have been subject to revisions during the country's alphabet-reform process, so this should be treated as a scheduled policy objective rather than an immutable event.[29][30]
Formula 1's power-unit regulations are expected to be reviewed during this period. A return to V8 engines has been discussed as a possible future direction, but it should not be presented as a confirmed 2031 event without a formal regulation decision by the FIA and agreement among manufacturers.
General elections are scheduled to be held in Nigeria, subject to the country's constitutional and electoral timetable.
