17 Klostes (Greek: 17 Κλωστές, "17 Threads") is a Greek crime drama miniseries directed by Sotiris Tsafoulias and written by Mirella Papaikonomou and Katia Kissonergi. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Panos Dimakis, the six-episode series stars Panos Vlahos as Antonis, a village shoemaker whose life turns to violence in postwar rural Greece. It premiered on Cosmote TV on 22 January 2024 and was later broadcast on Mega. Reviewers described it as one of the strongest Greek television productions of its year.[1][2][3]
Background
[edit]The series is based on the novel 17 Klostes by Panos Dimakis, which recounts the real-life story of a village shoemaker who committed a notorious multiple murder in mid-twentieth-century rural Greece. Screenwriter Mirella Papaikonomou first encountered the novel on the recommendation of her bookseller on the island of Kythera, who suggested she adapt it; during research, the writers came into contact with descendants of the victims, some of whom appear in the production.[1] Tsafoulias, previously known for the feature film The Other Me (Έτερος εγώ), directed the miniseries as his return to episodic television.[4]

[edit]The screenplay is credited to Mirella Papaikonomou and Katia Kissonergi, based on the Dimakis novel. Tsafoulias directs the six episodes, which were produced for Cosmote TV.[4][1]
Broadcast
[edit]17 Klostes premiered on Cosmote TV on Monday, 22 January 2024, at 23:00, with new episodes released weekly on Cosmote Cinema 1HD.[4] The series was subsequently rebroadcast on the Mega free-to-air network.
Reception
[edit]The series drew broad critical attention in the Greek press. A review in Athens Voice highlighted the production's careful reconstruction of the postwar rural setting and its willingness to engage with a difficult true-crime subject through the participation of descendants of the victims.[1] Writing for neolaia.gr, the critic argued that the series stood out in Greek television for centring its narrative on a perpetrator of a heinous crime, without romanticising him, and treated the work as a study of how communities produce their own monsters.[3] A review at Lord of the Series called it "the best Cosmote TV production and one of the best Greek series" ever made, praising the pacing of the character construction and the emotional weight of the ending.[2] Vlahos's central performance drew particular attention: Newsbreak wrote that he "steals the show" as Antonis.[5]
The Thessaloniki International Film Festival hosted a public screening and discussion of the series in September 2024, at which the author Panos Dimakis and members of the creative team spoke about the ethical challenges of adapting a real crime.[6]
