"other victims of the Holocaust"

[edit]

I think the Holocaust only refers to Jews. The linked article implies that, referring to "other victims of Nazi persecution". --2607:FEA8:D5DF:F945:EC2A:FDE3:9E53:A19B (talk) 03:15, 23 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

The main The Holocaust article's lead has this sentence:
"Separate Nazi persecutions killed a similar or larger number of non-Jewish civilians and POWs; the term Holocaust is sometimes used to also refer to the persecution of these other groups."
Our current wording here seems to follow this usage.
We have a whole article, based on many RS, about holocaust victims, and it includes all victims at that time under the broad umbrella term "holocaust", which is a very common usage:
"Holocaust victims were people targeted by the government of Nazi Germany based on their ethnicity, religion, political beliefs, and/or sexual orientation. The institutionalized practice by the Nazis of singling out and persecuting people resulted in the Holocaust, which began with legalized social discrimination against specific groups, involuntary hospitalization, euthanasia, and forced sterilization of persons considered physically or mentally unfit for society. The vast majority of the Nazi regime's victims were Jews, Sinti-Roma peoples, and Slavs but victims also encompassed people identified as social outsiders in the Nazi worldview, such as homosexuals, and political enemies."
As that article, backed by its many RS, uses the broad definition, so should we. Note that the question of "who" is included in the commonly cited "six million" victims is another matter. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 17:37, 5 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Preserving here by providing this link; my rationale was: "rm off-topic content as unrelated to the Holocaust transports". --K.e.coffman (talk) 04:00, 18 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

40 and 8s

[edit]

I'm curious about whether 40-and-8s or rolling stock based on them were used in Holocaust trains. The classic 40-and-8s of World War 1 were perhaps 29 feet long, not that much shorter than the "design boxcar" used in Nazi calculations - suggesting that the boxcars of WWII weren't that much bigger than those of the First World War. A 40-and-8 was intended to be for 40 men or 8 horses, and the SS manual calculated 50 people per car. This would seem to suggest a more crowded car even accounting for the slightly larger size. This article is a mess

[edit]

It's packed full of original research, unreliable sources, and sources that don't say what they're cited for. It needs a complete rewrite. Eldomtom2 (talk) 17:36, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

As a note to anyone who can speak German, by all accounts Alfred Gottwaldt is the best writer on this topic.--Eldomtom2 (talk) 13:03, 3 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
This article makes no sense and should really be removed or greatly revised. The author claims 1600 trains were recorded. Also claims that up to 7000 prisoners were packed in the train. Also claims 50 people were in the carriage. All in all, considering Jews claiming 6mln casualties only 50x50x1600 people adds up. Very unreliable article. 148.252.144.111 (talk) 16:44, 19 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
