SY-400
The Shenying (SY; Chinese: 神鹰; pinyin: Shényīng; lit. 'Divine Eagle') is a family of precision-guided multiple rocket launcher systems (MLRS) and short-range tactical ballistic missile (SRBM) systems developed by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC).
Designed primarily for export, the modular system bridges the tactical gap between conventional heavy artillery rockets and theater-level ballistic missiles.[1]

History and development
[edit]In the 1980s, the People's Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) sought to acquire a long-range multiple rocket launch capability. Four Chinese defense enterprises competed for the contract:
- AR-1: Developed by Changchun subsidery of the China North Industries Group Corporation (Norinco).
- A-100: Developed by China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), a subsidery of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).
- WS-1: Developed by Sichuan 7th Academy, a subsidery of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).
- WM-80: Developed by the Qiqihar subsidery of the China North Industries Group Corporation (Norinco).
The PLAGF ultimately selected the AR-1 platform, adopting it into service as the PHL-03. Losing competitors subsequently adapted their designs for the international arms market.
CASIC did not participate in the original 1980s evaluation due to scheduling constraints. However, in 2008, CASIC unveiled its own proprietary MLRS/SRBM design—the SY-400—at the 7th Airshow China in Zhuhai. Developed from the earlier B-611 tactical missile, the SY-400 incorporated a 400 mm caliber rocket airframe with vertical launch canisters and flexible payload configurations.
At the 2014 Zhuhai Airshow, CASIC introduced the SY-300, a lighter 300 mm variant intended as a lower-cost alternative.[2]
Design and Features

[edit]The standard SY-400 platform is mounted on an 8×8 heavy Transporter Erector Launcher (TEL) all-terrain chassis. Unlike traditional horizontally-fired MLRS platforms, the SY-400 launches its rockets vertically from individual, sealed storage-and-launch containers, reducing setup times and protecting munitions from environmental exposure.
Guidance and Precision
[edit]The standard SY-400 rocket utilizes a hybrid navigation suite combining Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) with satellite positioning (GPS or BeiDou).
- Guidence Correction: Control is maintained via four thrust-vectoring control (TVC) thrusters at the nose and tail fins.
- Accuracy: Yields a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of approximately 30–50 meters when using civilian satellite signals, with higher precision achievable using military-grade positioning channels.
Modular Payload System
[edit]The launcher system features a flexible fire-control and modular canister arrangement:[3]
- 8 × 400 mm SY-400 guided rockets, OR
- 2 × BP-12A short-range tactical ballistic missiles, OR
- 12 × 300 mm SY-300 rockets, OR
- A mixed combination (e.g., 4 × SY-400 rockets alongside 1 × BP-12A missile) on a single TEL chassis.

SY-300
[edit]Following the internal reorganization of CASIC's 4th and 9th Academies, engineers developed the SY-300 to address export clients seeking a less expensive alternative to the 400 mm system. The SY-300 replaces the nose-mounted thruster rockets of the SY-400 with four conventional control fins and offers a detachable guidance section that converts the system into a lower-cost unguided rocket.[4][5][6]
