Vultures (Afrikaans: Aasvoëls) is a 2025 short film written and directed by Dian Weys. It stars Edwin van der Walt, Jill Levenberg, Oscar Petersen and Albert Pretorius.
The film had its world premiere in the short film competition of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on 23 May, where it competed for the Short Film Palme d'Or[1] and won the Unifrance Grand Prix.[2]
Premise
[edit]The film takes place in the volatile moments after a car crash before the authorities arrive, and follows a hot-headed yet desperate tow truck driver as he fiercely protects his tow. But the situation quickly spirals out of his control.[3]

Production
[edit]Vultures was developed by Dian Weys as part of the European Short Pitch 2022/2023.[5] The short film was shot in Cape Town and was inspired by Weys's own experience during the aftermath of a car accident.[6] The film deals with themes of self-preservation and ethical responsibility.[7] It uses South Africa's ruthless and territorial towing industry as a metaphor for how people in capitalist economies are encouraged to compete and transact at the cost of others.[7]
Release
[edit]The film premiered at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on 23 May 2025, where it has been selected as one of eleven short films out of 4781 submissions in the Short Film Competition, competing for the Short Film Palme d'Or.[8][9]
It had its North American Premiere at the 34th Philadelphia Film Festival where it won Best Short Film.[10]
It had its Australian Premiere at 35th Flickerfest where it won an Honourable Mention of the Jury for International Short Film.[11]
It had its New York Premiere at the 25th Tribeca Film Festival on June 4, 2026.[12]
