Toys for Bob, Inc. is an American video game developer based in Novato, California, and founded in 1989. The founders, Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford (both pictured), met when Reiche sought a programmer to develop Star Control, and developed several games, including The Horde, Pandemonium!, and The Unholy War. In the early 2000s, the studio transitioned to working on licensed games before being laid off by Crystal Dynamics. It was incorporated in 2002 and Activision became their publisher before they acquired the studio in 2005. Credited with inventing the toys-to-life genre, the 2011 release of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure was considered a technological and commercial breakthrough. In 2018, Toys for Bob assisted with the remaster compilations Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy. The founders left the company in 2020. Microsoft acquired the holding in October 2023 and the studio spun off from Activision in May 2024. (Full article...)

Grey-cowled wood rail

The grey-cowled wood rail (Aramides cajaneus) is a species of bird in the family Rallidae, the rails. It lives primarily in the forests, mangroves, and swamps of Central and South America, usually from sea level up to 2,000 metres (6,600 ft). In some places, it is occasionally hunted and kept for food. Large for a wood rail, the bird has a grey head and neck, with olive-green to dark brown upperparts. The chest and flanks are a rufous colour, with the belly, rump, and tail being black. The legs are coral red, the bill is a bright greenish-yellow, and the eyes are red. The subspecies avicenniae can be differentiated by its smaller size and the lack of a brown patch on the back of the head. From March to August, nests can be found on flat branches and in thickets with three to seven eggs that are incubated by the monogamous pair. The chicks can move soon after hatching. This rail feeds on a wide range of foods, from molluscs to seeds. The species is not threatened. (Full article...)

Yongle Emperor

The Yongle Emperor (2 May 1360 – 12 August 1424), personal name Zhu Di, was the third emperor of the Ming dynasty of China, reigning from 1402 to 1424. The fourth son of the Hongwu Emperor, the dynasty's founder, he was granted the title of Prince of Yan in 1370 and later became responsible for defending the northeastern frontier from Beijing. In 1399, he rebelled against his nephew, the Jianwen Emperor, and emerged victorious and seized the throne after four years of civil war. As emperor, he elevated Beijing to the status of a second capital and supervised the reconstruction of the Grand Canal, which supplied Beijing and the northern armies. He sponsored the compilation of the vast Yongle Encyclopedia and pursued an active foreign policy, dispatching diplomatic and military missions across Asia. Maritime expeditions led by Zheng He reached Southeast Asia, India, Persia, and East Africa. He also personally led five campaigns into Mongolia. (Full article...)
