Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

To report an error in content currently or imminently to appear on Main Page, use the appropriate section below. Reports should contain:

• Where is the error? An exact quotation using {{!xt}} of the text in question helps.
• Offer a correction if possible using {{xt}}.
• References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
• Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 22:35 on 10 August 2026) and cannot be adjusted to your local time zone.
• Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
• Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
• No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
• Actual errors only. Failures of subjective criteria such as taste or interestingness, or failure to divert enough DYK readers to articles that aren't new or recently improved, are not errors.
• Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
• Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in "Did you know ..."

Current DYK

• "... that the steam locomotive Rocket went through a window of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia?" is mega clickbait fitting for a Buzzfeed article. I was expecting something akin to this, but in reality it was simply lifted by crane through a window. It seems to violate WP:DYKINT about "excessively sensational or gratuitous hooks". ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 17:26, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

  Pinging involved editors: Niagara, APK, NewAccount7295, and Crisco 1492. On a brief look, I think I agree with this report. Maybe we could adjust the hook to mention that it took three days? That seemed interesting to me. —TechnoSquirrel69 (talk) 17:54, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

  Considering the source uses "out the window", which similarly sounds like more than it is (when a deal goes "out the window", it's not a slow and negotiated failure!), I don't think "through" is an error or particularly misleading. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 17:56, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

  If I were to phrase it properly to someone, I would have said "that the locomotive was hoisted through a window", because "went" without further elaboration obviously implies that the window was broken. If I said "the ball went through a window", one would immediately guess that it broke the window, not that someone opened the window to let the ball in. The decision to not add "lifted" or "hoisted" implies some degree of wanting it to be misleading/clickbaity or thinking that the fact that it was lifted through one is not good enough to get people's attention. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 18:13, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

  I felt it was juxtaposition of locomotive and window in a sentence that was the most unusual aspect. The verb choice, to me, doesn't matter as much. The hook chosen was the least sensational of the phrasing I suggested as a couple were better suited for WP:DYKAPRIL. "Hoisted through" works just as well, but I don't believe it is possible to alleviate every readers potential preconceptions in 200 characters.   There's a difference between communicating something as explicitly and unambiguously as possible (which should be the goal of the article) and communicating something factually, briefly, and interestingly (i.e., hooks).  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 19:30, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

• A couple of stylistic quibbles: Odyssey in the bolded link should be in italics. Also, the link to The Odyssey (2026 film) should encompass all the words of "Christopher Nolan's adaptation of the Odyssey" (with "the" lowercase and not in italics). — RAVENPVFF · talk · 09:20, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

  I agree on the links, and removed them along with a copyedit. The hook now reads "... that the oldest surviving codex of the Odyssey (pictured) dating to the 4th century went on tour with the cast and crew of Christopher Nolan's film adaptation as part of its marketing?" —TechnoSquirrel69 (talk) 17:04, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

• In the Jacob Hersant item, I think it would be helpful to write "Victoria, Australia" rather than just Victoria. There are lots of other Victorias all over the world (and also several others in Australia). I know that it is linked, but still; not all of us casual readers want to click. • "He received the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture for ...". Two different awards, so I think that grammatically this needs to be, "He received Academy Awards for Best Director and for Best Picture for ...".
