Plot

[edit]

Marge becomes president of the Springfield Elementary School PTA, but learns that the school will be closed due to poor performance. Marge holds a hearing for ideas to save the school. Dewey Largo is able to contact [[Recluse|reclusive[[ author Constance Clavinger, who wrote the children's book The Plucky Little Goat, to come to the school's book fair to read its long-awaited sequel for the first time.

As Marge is about to go to the airport to pick up Constance, she is called to the book fair to stop Helen Lovejoy from destroying books that are unacceptable to her. Marge tells Homer to pick her up instead. Meeting Homer, Constance excuses herself to use the restroom. After a while, he finds her drunk at the airport bar.

As Homer drives Constance to the fair, she vomits on her clothes. They stop at an outlet mall, but accidentally shoplift clothing causing Constance and Homer to end up in jail with Snake. With his help, they escape, but Snake steals Homer's car. Because Constance's manuscript is in the car, they follow it using a track app. Homer rescues the manuscript while the car is being crushed.

Homer is shocked when he reads the book because it describes the goat being killed. Constance confesses to being disillusioned from fans constantly praising her and because her husband had an affair with a woman with a Plucky Little Goat tattoo. She wants to ruin children's love of the book so that no one will bother her. She enlists Arnie Pye and his traffic helicopter to get her to the fair.

To delay Constance, Homer causes a traffic pile-up to distract Arnie. Constance jumps out of the helicopter and Homer chases her until he suffers a concussion. He experiences chasing Constance as a children's book cartoon until he arrives at the school where Colin Jost was doing a book-reading that doesn't impress anyone.

At the fair, Constance begins to read her book despite Homer's protests. However, she sees how proud Marge is that Homer brought Constance and how happy Bart and Lisa are. She changes the story to be about the goat and a hippopotamus going on an adventure with the goat learning that the innocence of children is worth saving.

During the credits, footage of this episode is seen.

Production

[edit]

"The Children's Book Job" was written by Dan Vebber and directed by Matthew Nastuk. Vebber and co-executive producer Mike Price devised the plot in which "two people who find themselves caught up in zany situations become friends, then enemies, and finally friends again."[1] The plot of the episode is a parody of the 2010 film Get Him to the Greek.[2][1]

Emma Thompson guest starred as Constance Clavinger. Her character is a parody of Lucy Cousins, who is the author of the Maisy book series.[2][3][4] Comedian Colin Jost appeared as himself.[1]

Reception

[edit]

Jesse Schedeen of IGN gave it a score of 6, noting that it "offers nothing particularly remarkable to celebrate the start of the new season." He praised the ending as "heartwarming," highlighting that "Homer manages to move Constance and convince her not to ruin her life's work." He concluded by stating that "Season 38 of The Simpsons gets off to an acceptable, albeit rather low-key, start."[5] John Schwarz of Bubbleblabber gave the episode a 9 out of 10. He like the relationship between Homer and Constance, and the episode's honor to children's books.[6]

Alex Reif of Laughing Place highlighted the performance by Emma Thompson. He also like the running gag of the word "sudge" and the theme of people's perceptions.[7] Marisa Roffman of Give Me My Remote liked the scenes at locations not normally appearing on the show. She also highlighted the animation style of the dream sequence.[8]
