Syncing WikiProject Film & TV "Needs" parameters
[edit]I see that {{WikiProject Film}} has a parmater for needs-infobox=yes/no just like the {{WikiProject Television}} has. However, I don't see similar parameters for Film as there are for TV, specifically to indicate that the Film's Article lacks sections for Production, Cast, Reception, and Plot (or Premise/Synopsis) – e.g. the TV template has params for: | needs-production=yes/no | needs-character=yes/no | needs-response=yes/no | needs-synopsis=yes/no.
For Example, the film article for The Death and Life of Bobby Z is currently missing sections for Production & Reception, thus it is still a start-class article. If the Film template had the necessary params, I could mark | needs-production=yes and | needs-response=yes so that future editors could help upgrade Class from "Start" to "C", "B", "GA", etc.
So my question is, is there a reason {{WikiProject Film}} doesn't already have these parameters? Seems to me, if Editors are to help Improve Film Articles by alerting other Editors to the Absence of these sections, it would help to have the same param's as the TV template. Yes? No? Idunno?
If this idea has already been discussed and rejected by consensus, please direct me to prior/relevant discussion(s) so I can understand the rationale(s) so far presented. ThanQ IA ~<}:^> GreyElf (talk) 11:13, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
- I've been here a while and don't recall any discussion for or against this. It may never have been truly considered. The WikiProject is primarily collaborative in terms of guidelines and resolving disputes, not so much to work through a backlog of something like films missing production sections. If a film article is missing a section, it is self-evident, and an editor having interest will work on adding one. I'd recommend dropping a note at WT:FILM about this discussion. - Yes, @Erik, humanly viewing the article, it is quite evident the sections are missing, but someone who is casually browsing/reading wouldn't necessarily be interested in improving it. I was under the - perhaps mistaken? - impression that the "Needs" params are so Bots can automate the process of checking & adding to lists which _interested_ and _motivated_ parties can subscribe/monitor in order to improve articles. Otherwise, why have the "Needs" params at all? (such as the needs-photo= & needs-filmography= param's for Biographies) For example, when the Class= param is changed to Blank or ??? it shows up on lists to alert someone, "Hey, there's a newly-Unassessed article out there....go check it out and Rate it." Right? At least, that's been my experience after making significant changes that may warrant a Re-Assessment, and after someone has responded, and re-rated it, I'll get the notification on my Watchlist, sometimes very soon after I've blanked it. It is encouraging/satisfying as an Editor to see an article I've improved go from Stub or Start to C, B, et al. And I thought WikiProjects were more than just "collaborative in terms of guidelines and resolving disputes", but also collaborative in terms of Article Improvements within the scope of given subject areas. - I mean to say that editors do a lot of individual work, hence my mild skepticism about adding more structuring that may not be used.
