new images

[edit]

why were the images for certain characters (like spongebob himself) changed? i know thats the current style used in merch but the old images represent the actual style of the show, and the quality of these images on here aren't very good, sandy doesn't even a background. BigDawg3 (talk) 13:11, 9 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

The reason the images were changed was due to Nickelodeon being discovered to have licensed some SpongeBob-related material under a Creative Commons license, making them free for use, which is generally prefered on Wikipedia. that's a fair reason BigDawg3 (talk) 17:46, 8 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think the previous SVG was better representative of his character. The painted image is a "modern" style render of him making a weirdly off-model face, and it's in a low quality, while the old image is much more recognizable. Not to mention, the images were likely not meant to be licensed that way. To quote the response from WMF Legal, "We reached out to Nickelodeon to give them a head-up about the CC license in their NickRewind videos and specifically asked them if Spongebob content is in fact CC-licensed… a day after I sent it all CC licenses had been removed from their Youtube videos." Even though Wikipedia generally prefers free images, this case is obviously different and I think an example where using the classic SVG image would be better. Role in SpongeBob SquarePants - Drivers License

[edit]

In episode number 322a in the recent season 16, Spongebob was sent to a neighboring town and did receive his drivers license there, just not from Mrs. Puffs boating school. In the article it states he still hasn't received it yet, so a mention to this episode could give clarity on this situation. 2600:1012:A125:F971:4564:B53D:6C11:7B33 (talk) 05:06, 10 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

It was another temporary/fake-out license. As usual, the license was revoked (eaten in this case) by the end of the episode, after SpongeBob almost sent himself and Mrs. Puff into a volcano. The status quo is that SpongeBob will never actually receive his license, which is why Nickelodeon calls it his “never-ending quest” and things like that.
