What Happened to All of the Previous Posts on this Article's Talk Page? Where Did They Disappear To?

[edit]

What happened to all of the previous posts that pertain to this article? There were 17 years of comments here. Where did they disappear to? Was is it an accident that they were all deleted without being archived to another location, pure incompetence by the accidental deletionist, or is someone trying to bury the earlier posts encompassing 17 years worth of comments? They either need to be restored by someone who knows how to do that, or archived to a Wikipedia location that is accessible, with a permanent link on this Talk Page. The comments provide a history of the evolution of this article on Wikipedia, as well as the prior issues that were debated. The current debate above is just but one debate, and as readers and editors, we don't even know if the above proposal has already gone through several attempts to have this article merged with another existing article, or what the issues were previously that were discussed during that and other debates. Apologies for any errors in this request, I'm new to Wikipedia editing! As a disclaimer, I work for the USC Gould School of Law and while the proposed edit is meritorious, there is an obvious conflict of interest as the author and I work at the same institution.

  • What I think should be changed: The line "Securitization, a process in which many mortgages were bundled together and formed into new financial instruments called mortgage-backed securities, allowed for shifting of risk and lax underwriting standards" could be benefited by adding the citation below because the paper directly addresses why underwriting and securitization became relaxed. Namely, an increase in competition.

Likewise, under the "Causes" -> "Weak and fraudulent underwriting practices" section, adding a line such as "Competition between mortgage securitizers led deteriorating securitization and underwriting standards" using the same citation.

  • Why it should be changed: This edit provides color as to why specifically securitization and underwriting began to decrease, using historical trends and contemporary evidence. Currently, the section only describes the mechanics of how underwriting deteriorated.
  • References supporting the possible change (format using the "cite" button): [1]

As of now, the securization portion would NOT benefit from your citation, as it already has a citation. Instead, maybe add another line explaining why underwriting and securitizatin became relaxed. For example:
"Securitization, a process in which many mortgages were bundled together and formed into new financial instruments called mortgage-backed securities, allowed for shifting of risk and lax underwriting standards. Securitization standards were relaxed in the years directly preceding the financial crash due to _______.(Citation would go here)"

Hi ~2026-33930-96, pending your reply to the above I am marking this request as answered; to re-open it, change "answered=yes" to "answered=no" in the {{edit COI}} template above. Best, SpencerT•C 14:29, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
