Does anyone know of a map that shows Eswatini's territorial dispute with South Africa? It's consistently "Eswatini" on the Eswatini government's own English home page. Whether we use the official name because it's the official name, we use the name that happens to be the official name but not for that reason, or we use a name other than the official one, I'd be interested to know what response you get if you complain to the Swazi government about its own usage on its own website. (edit conflict) For general advice on why official names are not the default choice, see WP:OFFICIALNAMES. Broadly, we go by how things are referred to most often in reliable sources rather than always preferring an official name. On the question of eSwatini specifically, though, that is *not* the official name in English. Initially we thought it would be, but the government there are very clear that it's just Eswatini with normal English capitalisation when written in English. See for example. Swaziland

So I’m just trying to figure out which country this is. And I look on Wikipedia. Nowhere in the first paragraphs any mention of the fact this country was called Swaziland until 2018. It’s quite essential information though ~2026-25962-31 (talk) 13:38, 3 May 2026 (UTC)

Official versus formal

@Esotho, I don't know which other countries you're referring to, but countries often have a long-form, formal name and a short-form name that are both official. The United Nations indicates this to be the case for Eswatini.. Therefore, saying the country is "Eswatini or, officially, the Kingdom of Eswatini" is a nonsense distinction. Both are official.

Compare this with Laos, for which the UN gives "Lao People's Democratic Republic", the entire thing boldfaced because the government of what's still commonly known as Laos has declared that only the long name is official and does double-duty as the short name. (Indeed, in most current UN publications, it's referred to as such, or as the "Lao PDR", whereas for countries that do have official short names, they use those.) Do you understand how arguments work? Someone gives an explanation for why they believe something you said is incorrect. You can then either agree with their argument or you can point out what you believe is wrong with it—incorrect premise, false assumption, failure to take relevant factors into account, faulty logic. Just saying "No" isn't an argument. "I didn't hear you" or "I don't have a valid counterargument but I'm right anyway" aren't valid arguments. Largoplazo (talk) 19:11, 1 June 2026 (UTC)
