Nakshatra should contain its prominent star

Centering Spica puts more important stars Alcyone (Pleiades, Kattikā), Aldebaran (Rohini), Regulus (Māgha) off-center, and Antares is not even in its nakshatra Jyestha. Adjusting Spica 45' off-center better aligns with most other stars and nakshatras.

J2000 ecliptic longitudes: Pleiades 59.99° (Kattikā east), Aldebaran 69.78° (Rohini center), Regulus 149.83° (Maghā center), Spica 203.84° (Cittā center), Antares 249.77° (Jyestha west)

If Spica were strictly centered in Cittā (Aśvinī pādas 23.84°, 27.17°, 30.51°), then Aldebaran and Regulus will fall about a degree west of center of Rohini and Maghā respectively and Antares would not be in Jyestha at all, but rather in the eastern end of Anurādhā.

On the other hand, if Antares exactly defined the western boundary of Jyestha (249.77°) then Spica would be 0.74° east of center (Aśvinī pādas would begin 23.10°, 26.44°, 29.77°). Pleiades (0.22°), Aldebaran (0.01°), and Regulus (0.06°) would be much closer to their centers. Alexgenaud (talk) 21:06, 22 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Interesting article. Spica's ecliptic longitude was 203.84° J2000 (or 28 January according to Stellarium), 180.0° in AD 285, and 180.55° in AD 325. I could believe that Spica was not meant to be centered in Cittā, but rather closer to 180.74° (less than a degree east of center, see my TALK entry above). Western astrology uses the concept of fixed zodiac while Vedic astrology uses the concept of a moving zodiac. The moving zodiac gives a difference of about 56 seconds per year and this difference is known an Ayanamsa. The present value of this Ayanamsa is about 24.03 degrees.
