This page holds approved nominations that are waiting to appear in the "Did you know" section on the Main Page. Following DYK approval, nominations are processed and moved into a Prep area, and from there, prep sets are promoted to a queue, and then to the main page.

Backlogged?

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until someone promotes it to a preparation area. To alleviate this problem, we sometimes change hooks twice per day (every 12 hours) instead of once per day (every 24 hours); see WP:DYKROTATE for details.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to the nominations page, and it also isn't on this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is either in one of the prep areas, has been promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

How to promote an accepted hook

  • See Wikipedia:Did you know/Preparation areas for full instructions.
  • In one window, open the DYK nomination subpage of the hook you would like to promote.
  • In another window, open the prep set you intend to add the hook to.
  • In the prep set...
    • Paste the hook into the hook area (be sure to not paste in that that)
    • Paste the credit information ({{DYKmake}} and/or {{DYKnom}}) into the credits area.
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted [[Jane Fonda]]", preview, and save
  • Back on DYK nomination page...
    • change {{DYKsubpage to {{subst:DYKsubpage
    • change |passed= to |passed=yes
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted original hook to Prep 3", preview, and save

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue

  • Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
  • Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
    • View the edit history for that page
    • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
    • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
  • Add a transclusion of the template back to the nominations page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from the nominations page.
  • If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

Note: Articles intended to be held for special occasion dates should be nominated within seven days of creation, start of expansion, or promotion to Good Article status. The nomination should be made between at least one week prior to the occasion date, to allow time for reviews and promotions through the prep and queue sets, but not more than two months in advance. The proposed occasion must be deemed sufficiently special by reviewers. The timeline limitations, including the two month maximum, may be waived by consensus, if a request is made at WT:DYK, but requests are not always successful. April Fools' Day hooks are exempted from the timeline limit; see Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know.
Note for promoters: please be sure to add an "invisible" comment after a hook when you've placed it in prep, noting that it's a special occasion hook and including the date it is supposed to run. This should keep the hook from being moved after promotion, as sometimes happens to hooks when a queue needs a slot filled or a prep set needs to be made more balanced by swapping hooks between preps.

I could not access Korea's twentieth-century odyssey book but I will assume good faith. @Grapesurgeon: the first two sentences of the "description of the photo" section could be improved. "It is not known by whom the photo was taken" > The Newsis article hints that the author is 조선영화사 (조선영화사 촬영팀과 사진기자는 이 장면을 역사의 기록으로 남겼다). "The photo depicts a crowd of people, presumably Koreans, celebrating" > The Chosun Ilbo article says that they are independence activists.       • Long enough, expanded 5X recently enough. Everything is cited, although it would be better if some citations which cover multiple sentences within a paragraph were cited to each individual sentence or to the entire paragraph (where one source covers an entire paragraph), but I was able to figure it out. Earwig tool showed no copyvios (the percentages are high with some sources because of the long full title of the book). Both hooks are sourced and compliant. Personally I prefer ALT1 but if the main hook is used I would remove the word "coincidently" - that word weakens (and unnecessarily lengthens) the hook, and the coincidence is inherent in the statement itself. Snippet gives me "アル・カラルの遺産』道原かつみ徳間書店多分、女性で SF マンガを書く人の中では一番の本格派(佐藤史生は頭抜けている)。本書は異星人とのコンタクトを扱ったものだが、連載されていた雑誌の廃刊で、ほとんどこれからという時に終わってしまった。今連載" which translates as ""The Legacy of Al-Khalal" by Katsumi Michihara, Tokuma Shoten. Probably the most serious among female SF manga writers (Fumio Sato is head and shoulders above the others). This book deals with contact with extraterrestrials, but it ended just when it was getting interesting due to the discontinuation of the magazine in which it was serialized.". It seems like a review(?) of the light novel that the OVA is based on. But I don't think this is accessible outside of a hard copy in a Japanese library, and I don't have access to them. I was going to (later) rewrite them all past ANL to specific catered sentences for each domain, so if an article shows up in 2-3 sections, it would have a unique source/sentence for each on that specific context... but that's a, uh, year long project probably to do clean.                     An Outline article is a kind of list, and lists are permitted at DYK. WP:DYKLEN: Stand-alone lists are allowed, but only the prose part of article counts towards the 1500 character requirement. I checked and found that at least one Outline has run on DYK: Outline of canoeing and kayaking on 20 November 2010. I would not have rated it as eligible, as it falls slightly short of the 1,500 word minimum. I emphasis that the {{anl}} templates are fine; what is required is referencing of the introductory text of each section, which is the only part that counts towards the 1,500 word requirement.                     Interesting article, on fine sources, French sources accepted AGF, no copyvio obvious. Of the hooks, I like ALT2 best, because it points at the unfairness so far, but I would prefer a wording with a link to the tower instead of a man ;) - It would also be easier then to add (pictured). Also: he didn't personally "engrave", or I'd be surprised. The image is licensed, but could we have the version from the article, showing how large that display is? - In the article, the lead says that the men's names have always been there, - could that perhaps be a little more precise, like Eiffel's idea from the beginning? I see it's in the infobox, but it could be added to the prose. As far as the hook suggestions, the ALT2 part about "recommendation by Leslie Frazier" seems unnecessary. Granted, I know very little about football, but is his recommendation considered a big deal to others? The article is long enough and I don't see any copyvio issues.                         • With ALT1 there's no issue with the placement of the citation. Per WP:DYKCITE, it just needs to be by the end of the paragraph at the earliest, which is the case.
                        • ALT2 I agree is not suitable; however, I'd phrase why it isn't from a different perspective. I've been advised by other reviewers that hooks on artistic/literally works which contain long quotes from critical reviews generally do not do well as far as views go which we could say speaks to WP:DYKINT.
                        • ALT3, I agree that the nominator should find different wording/phrasing than using the term "Sound-world", as I had to look that up to find out what it means. Again a WP:DYKINT issue.
                        • You didn't state anything about ALT0, where I do see an issue. The wording from the source which supports the hook is Madara no Hana (Flower of Madara) and Kurai Tobira (The Dark Gate)—blend Western orchestral form with Japanese imagery, marking the birth of his East-West musical synthesis. This hook is close paraphrasing to the source. When we review we need to make sure that not only are there no copyvio issues with the article itself, but that the proposed hooks are not close in their paraphrasing. I would suggest ALT0 needs work.

                          • I think we should try to work with the nominator here as a relatively new contributor to DYK, although I have to agree with Finnfrog that these hooks are pretty dull. I do think there's some potential to ALT4, perhaps building on the fact from the source that the move to list it on the municipal registry (not the Canadian Registry, which is distinct; the house had been on the federal registry since 2005) came after the owner's plans to demolish it, although "replace it with a driveway" leaves out the important context that the driveway is for a six-storey apartment building, not just being put in for the pleasure of knocking down old houses.                               • The original article states that the Killam house was added to the Candian registry in 2005 but not in the municipal registry. The federal says it's an example of "well-preserved Queen Anne architecture."
                              • The official register states that the Killam house was built in circa 1898 - 1899, apparently built for A. E. Killam himself, but I don't know what records they have for that that say it was originally built for him. Anyways, it has been said to be accurately restored by its long-term current owners. It's architectural style from Queen Anne's architecture

                          That's legitimately it for the Killam House, if there's something interesting here, I guess it's fine. When you don't, it's fine as well.                           • "At the age of 14 he took charge of a woodland farm, clear-ing and improving it, working on the farm in the summer time and in the lumber woods during the winter. Before he reached the age of 22 he had cleared and improved 100 acres of wood-land and had built his own house and barn, doing all the mechanical work, except the window sash, himself."
                          • He is "affectionately" referred to as "Johnnie Bull"
                          • He "voluntarily took position as chairman of the entertainment committee" (Killam made an unforgettable meeting in Quebec)
                          • "It is said that in 1896, when the Salvation Army first came to Moncton, there was much opposition, particularly as to their custom of street parades, and an effort was made to have the legislature prevent this. It was through Mr. Killam's influence that the Salvation Army was allowed the privilege of worship in accordance with its own custom, and it has since proved itself a useful adjunct to the community."

                          Thanks @Wasianpower:, yes another copyedit was required! I prefer alt1 too so thats OK with me. The women missionaries bit has been better integrated. It is a key issue as women worked just as hard as missionaries but were they were unpaid assistants seen as happy to serve in the shadows. If Mamie had lived she might have gone on to write a biography of her husband using her letters as a source... and never heard of again. I have added additional copyright tags. As I understand it copyright is extended for 70 years after the creators death. No known creator = no known death = no copyright extension. e.g. stuff created by companies only gets 70 years after publication. I'm hoping that will appear around 31 July Requested at DYK talk.                               Overall: Hi, Hypnoticreflection. As someone who actively watches Zermatt's content I hope I don't have a COI. That being said, I think it's great that he's finally notable enough to have his own Wikipedia article.

                              Overall, the article checks out, it's quite comprehensive and doesn't lean too heavily on his primary sources. QPQ not required. That said, I'm not particularly enthused with the hooks. Occasionally going vegan to recover from or quitting his day job to pursue competitive eating doesn't excite me that much, especially as Zermatt isn't as promiment yet as, let's say, Joey Chestnut or Takeru Kobayashi. May I suggest hooks that will actively draw in the reader? I'm looking at things like:

                              @Sky Harbor: Hi, I'm honestly not too familiar with the competitive eating scene, but you're right that it's not too surprising that a competitive eater quit a related job or goes light after a challenge. I think competitive eating teaching him discipline isn't too interesting, I think that many other jobs could plausibly teach discipline too. Competitive eating affecting his social life sounds surprising enough on a first listen. As for specialising in street food, a quick search on YouTube on "Mukbang Street Food" seems to give enough results to convince me that it wouldn't be surprising enough, but I think adding the part where he offers publicity to improve businesses makes it a compelling enough trait. How about these two ALTs?

That said, this is a biography of a living person and as such, the article needs to be BLP compliant per WP:BLP (please be sure to read that as the rules are quite strict). It would be great if you could do another pass at BLP review – for example, any birth date needs to have a clearly attributed source, so you need to put a footnote either in the lede or in the infobox, or re-state the year of birth in the article body text and add a footnote there. It's also worth going through and asking if every single blog in the article actually needs to be cited in the article – it's better to have as few "marginally reliable" or question mark sources cited in the article as possible, as they tend to raise flags, and be ready to defend your use of any less well known sources per WP:RS. Hook is properly cited and interesting, though comptroller should be lower-case in that usage (I believe "inspired that city's comptroller, Hyman," or "inspired Comptroller Hyman") and probably doesn't need to be wikilinked. Also could proceed by de-piping Hyman link and keeping the initial (seems to be how he was best known). Only real issue I see is that we're in backlog mode so you need another QPQ. I don't think we could run the second one, as the "Old Mother Buchanan" cartoon does reference the memoirs but was in 1862, four years before it was actually published. For the third, if the promoter wants to go with this I'd recommend we add the rest of the quote ("definitely the worst presidential memoir") as otherwise it's not entirely in context.
