Notability

[edit]

Is Washington Post and New York Times big news stations? There have articles on this topic. Would this pass GNG? WXchaser (Say what?) 02:08, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

The problem is that WP:NEVENT looks for WP:LASTING coverage. The only WaPo article was published the day before the tornado hit Sunset Beach and can't constitute lasting coverage. While the source itself is definitely reliable, it's also pretty WP:ROUTINE WP:TRIVIALCOVERAGE that's not noticeably different from any given tornado (or hurricane or earthquake or really any other major weather phenomenon). guninvalid (talk) 02:19, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I will try my absolute hardest to get this to GA, even if that means spending 500 hours on this draft. I want to be committed. Spawned in February, came from QLCS, Came from cold front, No warning (except only afterwards), 3,700 without power, near EF4 intensity, hit at midnight (across two days), not predicted, killed 3, State of Emergency, New school drills, Awareness Month. I think that passes. My cup is half full, not half empty (optimistic). WXchaser (Say what?) 02:19, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Stranger things have happened. Stranger events have ocurred. Some have articles, some don't. Stranger articles have been accepted, stranger articles have been declined, and stranger articles have been rejected. I remain pessimestic, but best of luck! guninvalid (talk) 02:26, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
well then guess someone's gotta write about them! WXchaser (Say what?) 02:29, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
,, , , , at least two of these has to be relavent. WXchaser (Say what?) 02:28, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
This is about as notable as 2013 Shuqualak Tornado. WXchaser (Say what?) 02:31, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Only DailyHerald isn't a 404, and it's also published a day after the tornado. Day-of sources are good for establishing content, but for establishing notability, it is best to look for servers at least a few months out. Try searching with after:march 2021 and see what you can find. guninvalid (talk) 02:34, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Got you. Also trying my good faithful friend Google Scholar. WXchaser (Say what?) 02:36, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I figured out why your articles keep getting 404d. You're pasting links wrong: it should be [https://example.com/article 1]. Do not put a pipe and a number, it keeps breaking the link because Wikitext interprets the pipe as part of the link itself. guninvalid (talk) 02:45, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
WECT looks good! It is still iffy because WP:INTERVIEW, but I'd say the reporter provides enough secondary coverage that it's possibly okay. If this were to go to a WP:AfD, some people might balk at WMBF for being a listicle, but I'd say it provides enough coverage that it's okay. Generally speaking, government weather sources aren't going to help with notability because the NWS will write about every tornado or weather event, no matter how small. Natural Disasters ISP looks like someone's blog and I can't find any information about it's editorial or oversight staff or practices, so likely WP:SELFPUBLISHED and very unlikely to be considered reliable. guninvalid (talk) 02:52, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's a start. I'm finding more sources on this topic alone than any other tornado article, or for that matter, any article I've ever made. (Unless you count the National Bank Veto). WXchaser (Say what?) 02:54, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
"look for servers" that's how you know procrastiworking on Wikipedia while i'm supposed to be working on my cyber homework is a bad idea guninvalid (talk) 02:40, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Are you saying I need to be doing homework? WXchaser (Say what?) 02:44, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
(37,000) without power. typo WXchaser (Say what?) 02:33, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm now noticing that this tornado is actually on Wikipedia as a section on February 13–17, 2021 North American winter storm#Sunset Beach–Delco, North Carolina. It may be worth trying to expand on that section first. The sources on that section suffer from the same lasting notability concerns, with the only one source not from February 2021 being a WeatherChannel listicle. guninvalid (talk) 02:43, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Guninvalid If you need to do homework, then do it. it's 11:00 PM here, and i'm about to fall asleep. I'll come back tomorrow. (Thankfully, I've done my homework, though I should get some sleep.) WXchaser (Say what?) 02:59, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I actually started after my last comment. Have a good night. guninvalid (talk) 03:07, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
This is just a WP:CFORK of February 13–17, 2021 North American winter storm. Lightbulb Noob (talk) 11:55, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
You use that term way too broadly. There is so much content here not found in that article. ~2026-53641-49 (talk) 12:00, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm commenting on the current state of the article. Lightbulb Noob (talk) 12:01, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Actually I just realized what you meant, and I don't really see it. Lightbulb Noob (talk) 12:05, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
