María Eugenia Bayardo Dodge (born 1963), professionally known as María Bayardo, is a Mexican sculptor from Monterrey, Mexico.[1][2] She studied architecture before later studying sculpture in Toledo, Spain.[3]
Career
[edit]Before concentrating on sculpture, Bayardo studied architecture and worked with decorative textile art.[4] She later studied sculpture in Toledo, Spain.[3]
A 2017 profile published by Vanguardia and produced by Notimex discussed Bayardo's development as a sculptor and works including The British, Mecedora and El beso. The profile reported that by that time she had exhibited in Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, the United Kingdom and the United States.[4]
In 2017, Bayardo participated in Mujer. Maestras de la pintura y la escultura at the Museo Gustavo de Maeztu in Estella-Lizarra, Spain. The exhibition brought together thirteen contemporary women artists working in painting and sculpture.[1]
In October 2017, Bayardo's sculpture The British was installed in the Parque Lineal del Río Chiquito in Morelia, Mexico. Primera Plana MX reported that it was one of three works selected in a municipal urban-art competition for installation in the park.[5]
In May 2018, Bayardo presented Animalia-Anomalia, a two-person exhibition with Italian artist Giovanna Ugolini at the Società delle Belle Arti – Circolo degli Artisti "Casa di Dante" in Florence, Italy.[3]
In 2019, Bayardo exhibited with Guillermo Gómez and Miguel Ángel Martín del Campo in El arca de Babel, presented as part of the 131st anniversary programme of the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce.[6]
Mexican government records also list Bayardo's bronze sculpture Dolores y Consuelo among works accepted through the federal Pago en Especie programme. The work was assigned to the state of Quintana Roo and the Museo de la Cultura Maya.[2]
Style and influences
[edit]Coverage published by the Comune di Firenze described Bayardo's sculpture as reinterpreting historical artistic languages through a contemporary sensibility, combining Cubist influences with a sense of movement associated with Futurism.[3] The same source emphasized the structural rigor and simplification of form in her work while characterizing the sculptures as expressive rather than purely abstract.[3]
