How to determine the level of a protected page?

[edit]

This template has a “level” parameter. How do I determine the level of of a protected page? ChadCloman (talk) 16:57, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

On every page, there is a "Tools" drop-down menu. From there you can go to the "Page information" option. Scroll down, and you will find a Page protection section mentioning the current protection level. CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 20:48, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! ChadCloman (talk) 01:01, 13 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@ChadCloman: I'm puzzled by your question: Template:Edit fully-protected does not have a |level= parameter, and as far as I know, never has had one. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 14:43, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oh. I see the issue. When I tap on the “talk“ link for Template:Edit protected, it takes me to Template talk:Edit fully-protected. ChadCloman (talk) 00:54, 13 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Redirect Template:Edit fully protectedTemplate:Edit protected or Template:Edit fully-protected

[edit]

I stumbled upon User:Primefac's edit Special:Diff/1234468259. It seems to be the odd one out of the 51 edits on that day that dealt with centralization of edit request templates.

Nowadays, it shouldn't matter which template is used because the underlying module should detect the correct protection level, right? I think that anyone typing "Edit fully protected" expects to navigate to or to transclude Template:Edit fully-protected (with a hyphen). So I propose to change the redirect Template:Edit fully protected to Template:Edit fully-protected. Or maybe I'm missing something?

For context, Template talk:Edit fully protected redirects to Template talk:Edit fully-protected (i.e. this talk page) because of Template talk:Edit fully-protected/Archive 2#Requested move 8 May 2015 (see Special:Diff/666904235 and Special:Diff/666904261). —andrybak (talk) 19:06, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Really this is a WP:RFD matter. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 15:50, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I thought about bringing this to RFD, but if we can get a confirmation that the redirect change from 2024 (Special:Diff/1234468259) was made by mistake, it could be resolved locally. —andrybak (talk) 15:59, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Actually, it's going to be enough to get a confirmation that we won't break anything by changing the redirect. I spot-checked a couple of transclusions of Template:Edit fully protected, and I see no problem with redirecting it to the expected Template:Edit fully-protected.
When the corresponding subject page is protected, both {{Edit protected}} and {{edit fully-protected}} produce the same output, because the module detects the protection level and overrides the value from the templates. E.g. some of the trancslusions are on talk pages of template-protected pages, which used to be fully protected (example: Template:Class/icon).
A curious case is at Talk:Mollusk, where the current redirect is kinda breaking (not in a way that matters) the old transclusion of {{edit fully protected}}. The page Mollusk used to be fully protected (Special:Diff/237982891). In preview, {{Edit protected}} incorrectly reports non-existent semi protection (because of the default value semi since Special:Diff/1234467865), while {{edit fully-protected}} reports the "expected" (still non-existent) full protection. —andrybak (talk) 20:13, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Only if it's controversial, and I don't think it is. I'd say go ahead and retarget per WP:BRD. --Bsherr (talk) 16:00, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done in Special:Diff/1355588412. —andrybak (talk) 19:16, 22 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
