[edit]- Please see the Academy course for coordinators for general information and advice.
Coordinator tasks
[edit]- These tasks should be done as often as needed—ideally, on a daily basis.
- Assessment
- Monitor the daily assessment log. The main things to look for:
- Articles being removed. This is usually legitimate (due to merges or non-military articles getting untagged), but is sometimes due to vandalism or broken template code.
- Articles being moved to "GA-Class" and higher quality. These ratings need to correspond to the article's status in the GA and FA lists or the A-Class project review.
- Deal with any new assessment requests and the backlog of unassessed articles.
- A-Class review
- For each ongoing A-Class review:
- Determine whether the review needs to be closed and archived, per the criteria here.
- If a review has been open for a month without at least three editors commenting, leave a reminder note on the main project talk page, using the following boilerplate:
~~~~
- If an article has been put up for A-Class review in the past and you receive a request for assistance per WP:MHR for a fresh review, follow the procedure below for creating an A-Class review or reappraisal. This will make way for the normal A-Class review initiation process, so advise the nominator to initiate per the instructions.
- Quarterly Reviewing Awards
Quarterly Reviewing Awards - manual process |
Quarterly reviewing awards are posted on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/Awards page by the MilHistBot. As with other awards, change the status from "nominated" to "approved" to approve the award.
- Member affairs
- Invite editors to join the project, using the following boilerplate:
- Welcome anybody who joins the project, using the following boilerplate:
- Miscellaneous
- Vote on any open proposals to award the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves and approve any A-Class medal or A-Class cross nominations.
- Update the monthly newsletter with new developments within the project.
- Verify entries in the monthly article writing contest, hand out prizes, and update the monthly scoreboard and the newsletter accordingly.
- Fix the WPMILHIST invocation syntax on any articles in Category:Military history articles needing attention to tagging.
How to...
[edit]| Create a new task force |
Before a task force can be created, it is necessary to decide on a name for it. The process requires both a full name (e.g. "French military history" or "American Civil War") and a one- or two-word or acronym shorthand used for some template parameters (e.g. "French" or "ACW"). The instructions below use the "Fooish military history" task force (shortened to "Fooish") as an example; when creating an actual task force, remember to substitute the correct name, rather than actually creating the example pages.
Establish coordinator election pages | ||
Under the current system used by the Military history Wikiproject, coordinators are tasked with handling certain project-specific operations such as closing A-Class reviews. Because coordinators are held accountable to the project an election is held once a year to determine who among the community's members will serve as a coordinator. While the election itself is a simple approval vote, creating the pages needed for the election can be tricky. Therefore, this Academy page will serve as a walk-through on how to correctly set up the election pages. Before the election[edit]Before any election pages are created, the matter of the coordinator election must be brought up with the current coordinator tranche. Ideally, this should be done sometime between mid-July and early August. The reason that the coordinators must first discuss the matter of the election is to settle on the finer details of the upcoming election. Three key aspects should be decided. The first detail relates to the project's activity level: as the activity level in the project rises or falls, the number of coordinators judged to be needed to effectively run the project increases or decreases. Accordingly, then, the coordinators need to establish how many slots should be opened to the project members. In general, the project currently operates efficiently with roughly 8–11 coordinators, although the exact number settled on for the upcoming tranche must understandably be decided based on the workload and the efficiency of the current coordinator tranche. The coordinators must also decide if the total number should include or exclude the Lead Coordinator, which can cause the total settled on to fluctuate by one. The second factor that needs to be discussed is the election format. Historically, the format was a fortnight days for nominations followed by a fortnight of election. While the coordinators have used this option for several years, they also have the option of introducing or implementing a new nomination/voting scheme if one is judged to be needed. The final matter that must be discussed is the exact date of the election. Ideally, the entire election should take place in the month of September, but as there are 30 days in September the coordinators will need to officially designate a starting day for the nomination period. Once this day is decided, the format the coordinators have agreed upon can be used to determine when the nomination period will end, and by extension when the voting period will start and end. Collectively, these three points once settled will provide the information needed to establish the election pages. Creating the election pages[edit]Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators/(MONTH) (YEAR)replacing the MONTH and YEAR with the month and year in question. Once you have the correct red link the following information should be added to the page verbatim:
3
Overview
This election is to appoint the project coordinator team for one year, from (ADD THE DATE OF THE INCOMING TRANCHE HERE USING DAY MONTH YEAR FORMAT) to (ADD THE ENDING DATE OF THE UPCOMING COORDINATOR TRANCHE HERE, USING DAY MONTH YEAR FORMAT). Coordinators are generally responsible for maintaining all of the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. All of the coordinators, and especially the lead coordinator (or lead coordinators), serve as the designated points-of-contact for procedural issues and focus on specific areas requiring special attention. They are not, however, endowed with any special executive powers.
Responsibilities
From Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators: <blockquote>The primary responsibility of the project coordinators is the maintenance and housekeeping work involved in keeping the project and its internal processes running smoothly; this includes a variety of tasks, such as keeping the announcement and open task lists updated, overseeing the assessment and review processes, managing the proposal and creation of task forces, and so forth. There is fairly little involved that couldn't theoretically be done by any other editor, of course—in only a few places have the coordinators been explicitly written into a process—but, since experience suggests that people tend to assume that someone else is doing whatever needs to be done, it has proven beneficial to formally delegate responsibility for this administrative work to a specified group. <br/><br/> The coordinators also have several additional roles. They serve as the project's designated points of contact, and are explicitly listed as people to whom questions can be directed in a variety of places around the project. In addition, they have (highly informal) roles in leading the drafting of project guidelines, overseeing the implementation of project decisions on issues like category schemes and template use, and helping to resolve disputes and keep discussions from becoming heated and unproductive.</blockquote>
Practical information on coordinating may be found here and here.
The current coordinators are:
The current position the above named editor holds. By virtue of the currently used system, this slot will always be "Coordinator" with the exception of the editor who holds the position of lead coordinator, whose position box should be filled in as "Lead Coordinator"
This slot MUST be added to for each coordinator and should be left blank since only the listed coordinator can decide if he or she wants to stand for reelection.
Election process
* Nomination period: (Add the day and month the nomination will begin and the UTC time, day, and month the nomination will end here. For example, "8 September to 23:59 UTC 18 September")
* Voting period: (Add the day and month the election phase will begin and the UTC time, day, and month the election period will end here. For example, "19 September to 23:59 UTC 29 September")
* Any member of the project may nominate themselves for a position by adding their statement in the "Candidates" section below by the start of the election. The following boilerplate can be used:
<pre>
Name
Name
: Statement goes here...
*What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
**
*What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
**
Votes in support of Name
</pre>
* The election will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support as many of the candidates as they wish. The candidate with the highest number of endorsements will become the lead coordinator (provided he or she is willing to assume the post); this position may be shared in the event that multiple candidates receive the highest number of endorsements. The remaining candidates will be appointed as coordinators to a maximum of eleven appointments (including the lead coordinator). The number of coordinators may be increased or reduced if there is a tie or near-tie for the last position.
* Both project members and interested outside parties are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or make general comments.
Create the status template[edit]The second page that will need be created will be the status template. (A completed example can be found here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators/September 2017/Status). This template uses a set of established parameters to inform editors, readers, and other interested parties when the nominations will open, when the voting will open, and when the elections have concluded. The template itself resides at the top of the Candidates section, and will be present in the page you just created by virtue of the its presence in code copied from the preceding section. To access the template, add/Statusto the current election page so that the election page looks like Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators/(MONTH) (YEAR)/StatusIt should give you a red link, click it and then add the following to the status page:
;{{#switch:CURRENTYEAR
{{subst:CURRENTYEAR}={{#switch:CURRENTMONTH
8=<big>The election has not started yet. Please do not edit this page.</big>
9=
#default=<big>Voting is now concluded.</big>
}}
#default=<big>Voting is now concluded.</big>
}}
Current time is CURRENTTIME, CURRENTDAY CURRENTMONTHNAME CURRENTYEAR (UTC)
Once the above has been added take care the you change the year and the days to match the current election year and the days for the nomination and voting periods. Once the information has been updated save the page, this will result in the template on the election page being created and if done correctly should automatically switch messages to notify interested parties when the nomination and election phases open and when the election concludes. Tally Box[edit]/Tallyto the current coordinator election page so it looks like this: Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators/(MONTH) (YEAR)/Tallytaking care to replace the MONTH and YEAR tabs with the current election month and year. Once you have the red link, add the following to the page verbatim, taking care to not that MONTH and YEAR in the example below will already reflect the current election month and year:
+ <big>Tally</big> <br/> <small>[ edit]</small>
Candidate !! Votes
After adding the section save the page, this will result in the Tally Box being created and added to the election page proper. With this done all three pages for the coordinator election should be created and no further action should be required on your part. With all three pages now live, the current coordinators and the editors of the Military history Wikiproject will be able to edit the pages to announce their candidacies or their decision not to seek reelection. Notify the project that nominations are open[edit]See Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Academy/Using MassMessage for Project Notification for details on how to send a mass message. [edit]All A-Class reviews are eligible for closure 28 days after they were opened, or 5 days if there is a clear consensus for either promotion or non-promotion, by any uninvolved coordinator. The closing coordinator should check the review page carefully to ensure that there are three general supports and supports (or passes) for both the image and the source reviews, and that there are no outstanding points to be addressed. A guide to manually closing A-Class reviews is available, but normally the closing coordinator just needs to change A-Class=current in the WPMILHIST banner to A-Class=pass or A-Class=fail.
Discussion
[edit]Archived two project page talk pages; correctly?
[edit]@WP:MILHIST coordinators: I have manually moved two threads about the December backlog reduction drive and military historian/newcomer of the year nominations and voting from active talk page to Archive 178. The threads were completed near the end of the year. I put them after a December 31 completed thread in the archive. They were taking up considerable space on the active page. If I did that incorrectly or otherwise messed up the archiving, please let me know so I won't repeat any mistake. Also, please tell me how to correct the problem and I will do so, or correct it along with any reply to me here. Thanks. Donner60 (talk) 03:28, 21 January 2026 (UTC)
Dec 2025 contest results
[edit]Hi guys, could someone add the results to the Jan 2026 Bugle pls? Tks/cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 13:00, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- Working on it now. I started on it earlier this month but seem to have gotten distracted and forgot to finish it (groan). Donner60 (talk) 23:48, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Military aviation task force
[edit]@WP:MILHIST coordinators: @Hog Farm, Sturmvogel 66, and Zawed: I have updated the list of participants in the military aviation task force to eliminate blocked users and links to removed user accounts. I have hidden users that have not edited for more than three months - almost all are much longer. This has removed or hidden 48 of the 75 previously listed active participants. I think that links to these inactive or disappeared users are a hindrance and time waster for anyone looking to contact current editors on topics within this large category. As it now stands, even a few of the remaining participants do not edit very often. The warning on the page about inactive users is still well taken.
Articles on these topics appear to be coming up for assessment or reassessment more often than for some other topics, which is the reason that I did these updates.
It appears that I made a spacing error that reduced the margins on later sections. It may relate in some way to the table in the next section. This may or may not make much difference to the reader or length of the page in general. Nonetheless, I think it would be good for someone to look at this to see if it is a problem of any sort and, if so, to adjust the margins if you know how to do it.
I also made an update to the maritime task force but do not appear to have altered the layout of the page in any way, which I find puzzling. In line with the text on the page, I did not remove any user who had edits within the last year. Perhaps I will look at other task forces later but it took considerable time today to review just these two. (I updated some, but not near all participant lists, about this time last year.) Thanks. Donner60 (talk) 04:09, 2 February 2026 (UTC)
- There were some unclosed comment brackets that were preventing the div style tag from closing (and hence carrying over the column width to the rest of the page). I've fixed it. I wonder if this is something a bot might be able to do; periodically comment out editors from the list if they haven't edited in a year and readd them if they return? No idea if this is technically possible or, if it is, how arduous it would be to code - Dumelow (talk) 06:23, 2 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks. I am totally unfamiliar with how to code bots. Hawkeye7 is the bot expert and I think he would be best able to comment on that. Donner60 (talk) 03:07, 4 February 2026 (UTC)
- Sure it's possible! It is what we already do with the main members list! I will have to file a Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 03:38, 4 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Dumelow: I've coded and tested the bot. I will submit a BRFA. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 05:11, 9 February 2026 (UTC)
Jan 2026 contest results
[edit]Hi guys, could someone add the results to the Feb 2026 Bugle pls? Tks/cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 07:50, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- Contest results added. I deserve a trouting (spell check says it isn't a word, however). Second month in a row that I drafted it early in the month and forgot to transfer it later in the month. Donner60 (talk) 11:35, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- It's okay, how often have I done 80% of my stuff on the issue in the first week or so and then let it sit while getting on with other things...! Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 12:08, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
Bots cluttering WT:MILHIST
[edit]There seems to be several new bots that are posting a new threads at WT:MILHIST each time an article within the project's scope is nominated for a move. These are User:TarnishedPath/MovePlus, User:TheTVExpert/rmCloser and User:BilledMammal/Move+. Given the huge scope of the project, this is cluttering up our discussion page with low priority stuff. Is there a way to block or opt out of these messages? Nick-D (talk) 00:39, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- These, and similar messages, should be posted to the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/Requests for project input sub-page; I try to move them there when I can (Donner60 has done the honours for the most recent batch). Boilerplate templates tend not to get any interaction, but maybe people do click through and comment at the linked article; doing this leaves the main talk clearer for those topics actually generating discussion - Dumelow (talk) 06:41, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
A-class reviews, again
[edit]We have a large backlog of A-class reviews once again, with none having passed since January. I think that there's a need for much more active management by the coordinator team to try to rebuild momentum. Quite a few of the nominations date from last year:
- I have just closed Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Bertrand Clauzel as unsuccessful as it has been open since October and stalled since December
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/1931 Salvadoran coup d'état has also been stalled since December
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/HMS Lizard (1757) - I have pinged the nominator, who has not addressed my review left about a month ago
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Battle of Edington appears stalled
- I have closed Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/2001 Biggin Hill Airshow disasters as unsuccessful given two of the three reviews noted that it needed considerable further work, which does not appear to have occurred.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Battle of 42nd Street appears stalled.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Scharnhorst-class cruiser might progress
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Transocean Air Lines Flight 942 seems stalled
Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Richard Thomas Glyn is progressing very slowly
Marked A-class=pass on article talk page. Donner60 (talk) 23:24, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
I am assuming that as a coordinator emeritus it is uncontroversial for me to close ACRs in cases like those above, but please let me know if I should not do this again. Nick-D (talk) 06:56, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Nick-D, thanks for the nudge. I am more than happy for you to take whatever coord actions you like, we are very short on the ground this year. I've been a bit busy elsewhere recently but will try to get some reviews in to help out - Dumelow (talk) 10:02, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
- I agree with Dumelow. As I interpret the general remarks about emeritus coordinators, those coordinators can do the same tasks as current coordinators. They should feel no obligation to do anything in particular, however. They can do as much or as little as they wish and have time or interest in doing. Another step would be to post on notice on the project talk page asking experienced users to help with A-class reviews. A few do already. As Dumelow notes, there are not many active coordinators this year so additional help is needed even more than in the past few years. Donner60 (talk) 23:30, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
- I've certainly always interpreted the guidelines as being that an emeritus is as good (or bad!) as a current coord, and have closed the odd ACR accordingly. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 00:24, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
- Nick, it is quite appropriate for you to close ACRs in your capacity as a coordinator emeritus. We have fewer coordinators than hitherto and your pitching in is most welcome. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 00:30, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
ACC issue
[edit]Hey, I got my latest A-class award, but it gave me a 6th regular cross, when this should have been an ACC with oak leaves. Can somebody fix it? Not sure if it's as simple as moving the line, or if the bot will get mad because the nom was for a regular ACC. Thanks! Parsecboy (talk) 12:02, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
- I will fix it. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 19:45, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks, appreciate it! Parsecboy (talk) 23:55, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
- Having investigated, I think that it is okay now. The award was based on the template, which was incorrect, but the error has since been fixed. I have manually upgraded your award. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 03:16, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
- Sorry, I approved it. I checked the five articles were promoted and had not been listed against previous award but didn't think to check if the level of award itself was correct; one to remember for the future. Many congratulations Parsecboy, there's not many of these given out! - Dumelow (talk) 12:03, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
- Not your fault; it should have been correct and the Bot was in error. The next big test will be when I can rack up another nomination, for this will be the first A-Class Cross with Swords and the Bot will have to execute a new set of instructions. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 18:33, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
AutoCheck report for March
2000 Ecuadorian coup d'étatB class. Donner60 (talk) 02:29, 1 August 2026 (UTC)2025 Russian railway sabotage in PolandB class. But IMO barely adequate lead and barely within scope. Except for Polish military reactions sabotage was apparently carried out by Soviet security agents, not necessarily military - within context of war in Ukraine. Donner60 (talk) 02:34, 1 August 2026 (UTC)2026 Iran war regional mobilizationsStart class. One sentence run on sentence lead. Added See Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Academy/Writing an effective article introduction and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section for more information to edit summary via dummy edit after closed summary explaining change without it. Donner60 (talk) 02:45, 1 August 2026 (UTC)2026 Lebanon warB class - in form. Article now exceeds 12,000 words which is too long to more than skim over considering the backlog of bot reviews. Donner60 (talk) 02:57, 1 August 2026 (UTC)2026 Ramlet al-Baida airstrikeB class. Barely adequate lead but article is short and probably suffices. Donner60 (talk) 02:59, 1 August 2026 (UTC)A. P. Donner60 (talk) 03:36, 1 August 2026 (UTC)Battle of LențeștiB class. Leaving as b class despite three sentence lead. Article is quite short though B class in form. So lead can be considered sufficient due to article length. (I think) Donner60 (talk) 03:42, 1 August 2026 (UTC)Battle of Pathankot (1775)Leaving as B class for now. A relatively short article. Battle of Saint-Martin-LalandeStart class. Editor has 231 edits and none since March so not directly asking editor to add to article. Edit summary: reduced to start class for military history project and in banner shell, fails b3 due to lead too short to be an adequate summary; see See Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Academy/Writing an effective article introduction and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section for more information. Being Jewish After the Destruction of GazaRemoved project banner. Not within the scope. This book by an author with an apparent agenda and point of view mentions the Gaza War in passing but is not really about the war. It is about Jewish attitudes concerning the aftermath of the October 2024 terrorist attack on Israel and his disagreement with them. Apparent from the outset by the title. Apologies for my prolonged absence here
[edit]...these last so many months have seen me focus on my health - physical and mental - but it hasn't much left time for Wikipedia. Dear Coordinators, Shadow4dark and I are counselling a fervent Turkish believer on this page, but this user is getting a little excited and is engaging in repeated personal attacks. If any Coord has a little time to spare, advice and/or action after a review of the last talkpage comments would be much appreciated. Kind regards and many thanks, Buckshot06 (talk) 12:05, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
- I see the user has been blocked for personal attacks. That should take care of the problem which you have noted. Although three coordinators (one of whom is ill) and two emeritus coordinators are administrators, this type of problem (personal attacks) is best handled at the administrator notice board where more administrators will see it. If you are asking about the merits of the issue which led to the personal attacks, coordinators (and former coordinators if watching this page) may be able to offer comments. For wider coverage, such review requests should be made on the project talk page where it may attract more attention to the merits and perhaps even lead to mediation in some case.
- I am not suggesting this type of question or request for review might not also be raised here as well if you think it appropriate or you think help from experienced current coordinators and emeritus coordinators in particular might be especially able to help. I make the suggestion for putting the question or request on the project talk page in particular this year because there are fewer coordinators and emeritus coordinators to respond than in previous years and the usual volume of review work to be done. Thanks for seeking third party opinions and resolution. It is much better than edit warring, of course. Donner60 (talk) 05:09, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah, FWIW not that you can't raise the issue here, or that AN(/I)is not the "correct" place, but I would be able to respond faster with (and do not mind) a direct ping on my talk page; the user was already blocked by the time I saw this.⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 18:51, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
Comment: Some articles on American politicians. Second opinion sought as to whether their military service was sufficiently defining to warrant being in scope. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 21:07, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
- For the ones with military service that we had records of their career, I kept as I lean towards that being in-scope. Albeit brief, a couple of sentences with the service record of X having fought in Y campaign, listing some promotions and units, is sufficiently historically relevant for us to consider it in scope. Importance would of course be "Low", but still non-zero. The USPHS guy, I excluded as his service was non-military in nature. ⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 18:56, 22 June 2026 (UTC)
- John R. Thornton (Arkansas politician) Not sure this is in scope. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 10:52, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- John R. Thornton was not a general in the Confederate States Army. He is not on Wikipedia's list of Confederate generals (which I wrote). An online article at the "Civil War Talk" web site, from 2021, has a follow up comment: "The best compiled list of Confederate general officers, that I have found is Wikipedia, with photos and biographies." I decided to look up the last surviving Confederate general in writing this comment (John McCausland, in 1927, about 7 years after the second longest surviving general). It was the first time I saw that comment on the web site.
- Thornton also is not mentioned in any capacity or for any military accomplishment in Wright, Marcus J., General officers of the Confederate Army: officers of the executive departments of the Confederate States, members of the Confederate Congress by states. New York: The Neale Publishing Company 1911. OCLC 795106013; Warner, Ezra J. Generals in Gray: Lives of the Confederate Commanders. Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 1959. ISBN. Eicher, John H., and David J. Eicher, Civil War High Commands. Stanford: Stanford University Press, 2001. ISBN 978-0-8047-3641-1; Sifakis, Stewart. Who Was Who in the Civil War. New York: Facts On File, 1988; Faust, Patricia L., ed. Historical Times Illustrated History of the Civil War. New York: Harper & Row, 1986. ISBN 978-0-06-273116-6; Heidler, David S., and Jeanne T. Heidler, eds. Encyclopedia of the American Civil War: A Political, Social, and Military History. New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 2000. ISBN 978-0-393-04758-5 and Long, E. B. The Civil War Day by Day: An Almanac, 1861–1865. Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1971. OCLC 68283123. I could go probably go on if I looked at books specifically about the Army of Tennessee but the definitive general works just mentioned should be more than enough to prove the point, I am sure.
- The contemporary Arkansas biography written while Thornton was still alive and which is cited in the article states that Thornton was an assistant adjutant general on the staff of General Hardee and wrote a regimental newspaper. I suspect he remained a lieutenant or was perhaps a captain at some later date. I assume the author of the article had no real knowledge about the United Confederate Veterans organization or about the armies in general. (For example, brigadiers were not commanding regiments, the only units to which Thornton belonged before joining Hardee's staff after recovering from his wounds).
- The program for the United Confederate Veterans reunion program for 1908, cited in the article, lists the officers of the UCV. The overall president (for that is what he really was) was called a "general." In fact, the founder and some of the later leaders were Confederate States generals but I surmise they did not have enough left to fill these all these organizational posts by 1908.
- Regional heads of the UCV representing groups from major armies were "lieutenant generals" State organization heads were "major generals." State area heads, about four per state for each major army were "brigadier generals." These were not high ranking officers but were chosen by their various groups. The state areas were further divided into local "camps." I assume these also had an honorific title, perhaps "colonels" but I did not look it up further. The organization, founded in 1889, was quite large, with many "camps" around the south (and if memory serves me correctly rather than info from the article), a few were eventually established in the north.
- Far more that you needed to know, I assume, but as I note next, it may need to be explained with sources on the talk page of the article. That is the principal reason I researched and wrote this long comment.
- The bottom line is that Thornton was not notable as a high ranking officer or for anything he did during the war, according to sources. Getting wounded before becoming an assistant adjutant general would not seem to make him notable for military service. As a politian, I assume he used it in his campaigning, however. I would say not in the scope. The article needs to be corrected where it states he was promoted from lieutenant to brigadier general and an explanation on the talk page probably needs to be posted, along the lines of the above, to prevent any controversy about the change and removal of the project banner. I can do that if you agree. Donner60 (talk) 07:01, 29 September 2026 (UTC)
- Radu Cioculescu Comment: Long B class article. Leaving open for second opinion if within scope. Brief participation as a boy scout in WWI, does not appear to have done much of military value. Participated for a short time as a captain of artillery in WWII. Mentioned in the two sections on the World Wars. Service may not contribute to notability. I think it may just be within scope but leaving open for possible second opinion. Donner60 (talk) 02:26, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
@WP:MILHIST coordinators: I have reviewed the June articles. I have made a few comments and left a few titles without strike throughs for possible second opinions. If no one further comments or completes these, I will close them as suggested after a brief time. Only one July item appears to need closure, presumably after Hawkeye7 considers Swatjester's comment. That brings the reviews up to date (except for a few open items for possible second opinions). May is finished. August and September should be posted after Hawkeye7 returns from out of town and reviews a template problem for August. Donner60 (talk) 03:19, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- Good job on reviewing all these, it's important but unsung work. I agree with your position on the Croatian National Youth and John R. Thornton articles (the latter should be amended to state that he was not a brigadier-general in the army). I think Radu Cioculescu might just be within scope for his roles in the Second World War - Dumelow (talk) 06:00, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
Invitation to beta test Adjutant
[edit]Hi there coordinators and past coordinators.
I'd like to invite you all to help beta-test "Adjutant", a user script I've been working on that's a tool to assist with MILHIST clerking activities and provides one-click options for automating a lot of repetitive manual tasks.
At the moment, the primary features are: 1-click assessment for B-class articles, 1-click moving of threads to "Requests for Project Input" or other locations. There are some A-class clerking tools around notifications for stale reviews, but they're untested and I might strip them back out to focus on areas with better ROI.
You can find the documentation and install page at WP:ADJUTANT -- installation is the same as any other user script (import to your common.js). The script is available for anyone to use, however I expect that the main audience are coordinators, past coordinators, prospective coordinators, and folks active with MILHIST clerking. ⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 15:37, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
- This looks really interesting! Always nice to make the minutiae of clerking simpler. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 11:51, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
Missing 2026 contests
[edit]Where can I find the January to May 2026 contest pages? The latest archive ends with December 2025. I wanted to check whether the Battle of Piacenza article that was assessed as B class in March 2026 was submitted to the contest page. Thanks. Djmaschek (talk) 03:26, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- I am afraid I have never had anything to do with the contest but is there an award for the overall 2025 winner missing from the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Awards. Was it ever made? - Dumelow (talk) 05:45, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- Yes. I made the award to Sturmvogel_66 on January 2. I did not add it to the awards page, probably because I forgot - or simply did not realize I should do it. I have now added it to the awards page. Thanks for catching this. (I had to educate, or re-educate, myself on how to find the diff to link to, but finally found the key - right click will bring it up. It can't be found by left clicking anything on the page history. Something you probably know but I had to search for the instructions to add that to the post.) Donner60 (talk) 08:58, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Djmaschek, A.Cython, and Dumelow: As A.Cython has noted, there is a new archive page starting with 2026 which is linked above. The older archive page was getting a little too long, quite a few bytes. Donner60 (talk) 07:32, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Djmaschek, A.Cython, and Dumelow: Adding a new ping in the event one of you read the earlier one posted a short time ago. There is a contest log for 2023-2025. In February 2025, I set up a contest log page for 2025. I decided not to use it and added 2025 to the 2023-2024 log, then renamed it 2023-2025. (There are several earlier logs for previous years.) Unfortunately, the 2025 log page still exists but now has no content. I just deleted the captions, which were the only content. The page probably needs to be deleted to avoid confusion. I will look up how to tag it for speedy deletion, which I have done infrequently. As I have understood it previously, non-administrators can only delete an article under very limited circumstances which may or perhaps may not apply to this situation. The article needs to be tagged for at least seven days even for speedy deletion, if memory serves me correctly. Donner60 (talk) 09:11, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks Donner60, I've presumed it was Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Contest/Log/2025 and went ahead and deleted it for you - Dumelow (talk) 21:11, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
About demoting an A-class article
[edit]Hey everyone, I noticed that Bijeljina massacre was delisted at GAR last year but still has its MILHIST A-class status from 2014. I have no comment on the quality of the article, but it seems like this may need to be reassessed (as should other A-class articles that are delisted at GAR or FAR). - Just barely IMO -- he did raise a unit and served as aide-de-camp to Austin. The question is going to be do enough sources exist to get coverage of that period of his life. For our purposes, I don't think the coverage is there for B-class if we say it's in scope; but I'm not sure it's fair to the article for someone whose service was politically appointed and short-term in nature (even if somewhat high-profile at the time) to artificially have the assessment be lesser because it's missing deeper coverage on a tiny portion of his overall life (but the only portion relevant to our WP). So this one may be a case where the sources determine if it makes sense to be in scope or not.⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 22:42, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
Sept 2026 coord elections
[edit]Anyone feel like setting up the relevant page? Like to link to it in this month's Bugle... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 08:27, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Has the start date been agreed on? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 11:05, 14 August 2026 (UTC)
- Well for the past 4-5 years (at least) the agreed nomination period has been 00:01 UTC 1 September to 23:59 UTC 14 September, so I think we can safely go with that again. The voting period has always started immediately after, meaning at 00:01 15 September, and ended at 23:59 UTC on either 28 or 29 September -- I would suggest going with 28 September as it means exactly 2 weeks each for noms and for voting. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 14:39, 14 August 2026 (UTC)
- At some point we decided to reduce the time from fourteen days to ten. The Academy page says:
Historically, when the system was introduced, the format was 14 days for nominations followed by 14 days of election, which worked well for the community but created an illusion that the process was "slow". As a result of this perception the community approved a change in the process that now sees the election format using a 10-day nomination period followed by a 10-day voting period. This process is marginally faster than the older two week system, which helps speed the process up.
- I have created the relevant page using the instructions with nomination from 1 to 10 September and election from 11 to 20 September. We still have two weeks for discussion and correction before nominations open. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:43, 14 August 2026 (UTC)
Monday, September 7 is "Labor Day", a national holiday in the United States. (First Monday in September.) Some people take an end of the summer vacation during the week before or the week of Labor Day or both. Some school districts start classes on the day after Labor Day, although others start earlier. I am not sure whether having nominations during this period would keep many people away from Wikipedia during most or all of this period, of course. (In the past, though not recently, we would take a vacation week before and/or after this date.) I acknowledge that this may not be enough of a concern to have a 14 day opening period. The four day extension would add a Friday through a Monday for additional nominations.
- I am somewhat indifferent but lean toward using a 14 day opening for possible additional participation. This holiday week time consideration would not apply later in the month and as far as I know, does not apply in any other countries. I think a 10 day period for election need not be extended. I add this for consideration and discussion. I also hope, for the continued smooth running of the project and some relief for Hawkeye7 who does so much of the work with few additional helpers, that we get a few more coordinators this year. Donner60 (talk) 03:12, 17 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for setting it up Hawkeye. Yes I see the instructions say 10 days each for noms and voting but although that goes back to at least 2021 we've been making it 14-15 days each for the past few years in actual fact. I suggest we make it 14 days each for this election as it seems our de facto standard (and gives us more time to attract nominees and deal with the concern Donner raises) and update the instructions accordingly. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 04:00, 17 August 2026 (UTC)
January and February autochecks
[edit]@WP:MILHIST coordinators: I have finished and removed the January and February autochecks. I proceeded to finish with the open ones, especially in January. I had looked at these earlier but had left some open for possible comment or second looks. As I recall, the March authocheck was posted late and now has more reviews needed than those still needed for later months. I will work on these as promptly as I can after working on March. Thanks to the tireless work by Hawkeye7 with help from SwatJester, the reviews of articles for the following months are mostly completed. With any luck (a little more effort on my part, actually), a low backlog on these reviews, as has been usual in the past, may soon be reached again. Donner60 (talk) 19:57, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
- As a quick reminder, if you're using WP:ADJUTANT, the autochecks will have a "Confirm" or "Downgrade" option for each entry, and the tool will handle the appropriate talk page template updates for you as well (downgrading gives you the option to select which criteria it failed and will set the class to C or Start accordingly). And if you have suggestions as to how I could improve the tool to make this experience easier/more streamlined please let me know. ⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 22:34, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Swatjester: The ways of templates are usually beyond my understanding. At first, I thought I had it set up. But it wasn't appearing. Now it has showed up. I definitely need to leave templates to you, Hawkeye7 and anyone else who is skilled with editing or inventing templates. Thanks. Addendum after double check: I jumped the gun on this one. It has showed up for assessment requests but not for bot reviews. So I have still missed a step. I had been having some trouble with entering the special page addition and that is probably the problem. I have done it before and looked at the information page but I must be in some sort of fog right now (or some excuse) for not being able to complete it. I'll get it done eventually. - Late comment: Articles exist on Mountain warfare, Army Mountain Warfare School, Mountain Warfare Training Center and Mountain Warfare Training Camp Michael Monsoor. Expansion and improvement are needed. Mountain warfare has mostly brief history sections covering the topic in various wars from the Punic Wars to modern times. There are also main articles on these wars. While some interested editors may wish to expand and improve these articles, it is not obvious to me that a project is needed. Also, discussion could be opened for a time on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history to provide for project members in general (not just coordinators) to comment and discuss any expansion or improvements needed in these articles and whether any new articles are needed. See also Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Incubator where proposals can be made and discussed and to see if there is interest in working on the proposed project and whether the start in the incubator should be continued.
