Deletion
[edit]I know I'm going to get flak about this, so here it is: I'm deleting those entries that aren't specifically called "X (something)", and/or are not commonly called by those names. Planet X does not qualify for disambiguation, because someone searching for "Planet X" is not going to type in "X". In fact, the only one I can see that is a valid term in the science section is the chromosome link. ALTON .ıl 01:41, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
We seem to have ended up in the curious situation that the roman numeral X isn't listed under X in this encyclopedia, possibly because there is no article about Roman_Numeral_X. Is it a dictionary item instead? Maybe we could create a page titled "Other common uses of X"? Ideas?
I believe that this was a page about X, long before it was a disambig page. NevilleDNZ 11:14, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
What about
[edit]Songs
[edit]Not all songs are notable. There are easily 100 songs or more named "X"—we don't want to put all these here since the majority are not notable. I routinely clean-out non-notable songs from disambiguation pages to keep the disambiguation page useful for their intended purpose. If the song is notable (either a single, popular airplay, covered by other artists, etc.) then it should certainly appear here. +mt 02:31, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- I would agree with this strategy for this page because it tends to get overlong. On shorter dab lists, the notability wouldn't be as big an issue. Notability is generally established in the articles, not on dab pages. SlackerMom (talk) 12:57, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- According to policy and the DAB project there is no limitation to the articles that can be listed, otherwise the disambiguation fails to perform its function. Every single active page on Wikipedia that has a similar name should be listed. If the list is too long then less likely entries should be scrutinized, but in the case of a song that's called "X", and doesn't go by anything else, it's not really a debate it should be listed. If the article is not notable then put it up for AfD. When the link turns red remove it from the list. Of course we're not going to list every single song called "X", just the ones with articles whether they're featured articles or stubs with notability tags. æron phone home 14:44, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I have to reverse my earlier opinion and say I agree with you. Long pages will always require greater scrutiny, but it's been my practice to include song titles from album pages even if they don't have their own articles. SlackerMom (talk) 15:14, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'll respect that there is no limitation to what can be listed on a DAB page, so we'll keep the item here for now. However, as I stated previously, there is no article for the song, nor do I anticipate one to be created (it appears to be just another 1:58 track off the album). And, of course, I would never remove it if there was an article for the song (I often prepare red-links to songs with potential notability to encourage them to be started). +mt 01:49, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

- The disambiguation page manual explains that these index-type-pages only cover exact matches of the page-title. Hence, we have a completely separate and unrelated page for X-ray (disambiguation) (and X Factor, etc). :) -- Quiddity (talk) 22:20, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Splitting proposal
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
I believe this disambiguation page should be split into X (disambiguation) and The X. There are more than enough topics to be included in two pages. Here are some good examples:
- The X (TV series)
- The X's
- KTHX-FM, also known as "The 'X' at 100.1 FM"
- WXDX-FM, also known as "The 'X' at 105.9"
- WQXA, also known as 105.7 "The 'X'"
- WRAX, also known as "The 'X' at 100.5"
- WXEG, also known as "103.9 The 'X'"
- WNFZ, also known as "94.3 the X"
- École Polytechnique, also called X
- Xcel Energy Center
Splitting these two pages will also revert an undiscussed merge from 2007. What do you think? GilaMonster536 (talk) 17:46, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- Support, this disambiguation is long and the two pages can certainly be linked across for navigation. Utopes (talk / cont) 00:50, 21 January 2025 (UTC)
- Support, per Utopes. I would also support and suggest putting X, the social media service owned by Elon Musk also formerly known as Twitter closer to the top of this disambiguation as well. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 03:27, 16 February 2025 (UTC)
- Support, list is getting way too long. - Mailer Diablo 21:42, 17 February 2025 (UTC)
@GilaMonster536: @Utopes: @Hurricane Clyde: @Mailer diablo: You can split the page if you wish now. I am closing this discussion currently as well. Sheriff U3 01:16, 19 March 2025 (UTC)

– No clear primary topic, while the letter may be the most common term in long-term significance there are other uses such as the Roman numeral, and multiplication sign. The social network has 237,239 views and the 2022 film has 84,530 compared with only 26,113[] for the letter. All Google results are for the social network apart from one for the 2022 film, Images appears to mainly return the social network but some results are for crosses etc and Books seems mixed though the social network isn't there. - Oppose X as the letter of the alphabet is a fundamental primary topic. We definitely should not weigh contemporary uses over its most basic form. (It's why Avatar is about the spiritual context that has been around for thousands of years rather than the film). Primary topics may not always get the most page views but when its this fundamental a concept, page views should not really be taken into account. Masem (t) 20:23, 18 April 2026 (UTC)

- Oppose on grounds of consistency: for every single-letter page A to Z, the primary topic is the letter itself. ~ oklopfer (💬) 20:58, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
- If X needs disambiguation then it is fine to have an exception, see WP:CONSISTENT. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:30, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose per long-term notability. 162 etc. (talk) 22:02, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose with all due respect to Ti West and Mia Goth, I'm pretty sure this discussion could be depicted next to "WP:LTS" in the dictionary. User:Masem is correct that page views are simply not the best way to judge the primary topic in this instance. DiscoursesonLivvy (talk · contribs) 03:03, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
- I think this is a bit too soon after Talk:X (social network)/Archive 16#Requested move 9 February 2026 finally moved Twitter to X (social network). And I say this as someone who's researched Talk:Telegram (disambiguation) quite a bit (and haven't been content with the quality of the argumentation there). In that case, at least we're weighing between how to help readers navigate 100 year old tech and 10 year old tech (orders of magnitude). In this case we're comparing a fairly basic component of numerous languages since 1000 years ago to 10 year old tech (again orders of magnitude, but the difference is several more), and both the usage and the long-term significance arguments weigh much more heavily in favor of the former. --Joy (talk) 08:52, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
